^ Looks like they've finally clarified the wording which states that patch repairs including flanges which were originally spot welded can still be spot welded and don't have to be continuously welded.
I've lost count of how many times I've explained that on here and been disagreed with.

I spent £400 pounds on my mitsubishi pajero wheel arches welding and didn't look much better than that I think you have done well I would spray it with stone chip don't waxoyl it

Although it may manage to pass an MOT if you were charged for that then you were robbed. It's not welded, but rather a series of blobs sprayed about some of which are helping to hold the metal together, many of which aren't.

It seems that to pass an MOT it doesn't matter if it's welded or not as long as you hide it and you don't even need to do that very well either.

Correct, provided the blobs of some description go right round the repair piece when required and it's got something (paint, underseal etc) poured over it it will pass.
Makes me laugh seeing people advertising welding services to 'MOT standard'

When my truck failed mot because of rot I was told by the tester that it had to be seam welded and told i could paint it black for the retest but no under seal until it had been inspected

To my knowledge there's nothing in the regs to say you can't cover it up before submitting it for retest.

I Just had the Puma in fro an MOT after welding the inner sills. the original test in April failed because of the holes. I had to patch the inner and outer rear sills on both sides. These were undersealed and painted for the second full test as it was onver he retest time period
It passed without a problem on the welding.

when you say truck it may well be a different class MOT which may well be why he said you cant underseal it.

That's exactly where I was coming from when I mentioned it previously, and in my case it was a car not a truck.

I guessed it was a change to prevent the likes of filler or a pop riveted repair then a load of underseal.

I usually grind back the weld beads a bit. (upside down always seen to be a little higher) and put plenty od underseal on. it it were winter months with salt on the road you'd be stupid not to protet the work you have just done.
To my mind. it makes no diference if the tester can see the metal or not. if you did the repair before he actually saw the corrosion, i.e. if you did the repair before ant mot test, then how is he to know? Its not like its not going to get tested ever again.

before I had welding gear I ran over a rock and it well dented the chassis then failed the test I just cattied it in and blackjacked it took it back and guy said fine and it passed

On closer examination, if I were an MOT tester, I would fail it because it's not fully seam welded. See the red markings in the photo that shows what looks like unwelded parts:

It passed the mot with the repair just to pick up on this point made by David 2015, it's really hard to see from the photo that I took,the bit you've highlighted far right is where the underseal had lifted, the Elongated "c" shape you've highlighted at the front was seam welded from above, the big blob on the left is where I ground back and the mirror finish looks like a hole, and the other bit on the left if you look closer isn't part of the same continuous weld, since this repair I've invested in a decent esab helmet that fits my massive head properly and doesn't get condensation forming between the 2 layers of glass if I breath on it twice,

"under seal makes assessment of welded repair difficult"
If you say nothing and something fails big style ,You are in the witness box at a inquest .

That sounds like what my tester often says about many things, he has been told if in doubt pass and advise.
You cant fail because something could be not OK but you cant actually tell.

For example where sills have plastic skirts over them and he suspects not much sill beneath but he cant prove it, remembering no disassembly allowed.

Yep, that's the whole reason for stating advisories which is misunderstood by the vehicle keeper; It's not to give a heads up of what it could fail on in the future, it's to cover the testers backside should anything major happen in the future.

Amazing BMW/Mercedes and a lot of others rust even into the late 1990 and 2000 models. Not having a go because I know not everyone can buy new cars or wants one (mine's 10 yr old) but I would just say think of the structural integrity, God forbid you hit anything in any car. Those plates are right by your feet/legs.

Looks like some butt joints too? Possible to plate over them for a bit of extra security?
