Really annoyed today.

Started in a new company a month ago and knew they had problems recruiting.

Nothing to do with the company but more with the area.

Anyway. Today 30% of the staff didnt turn up for work. No phone calls, nothing. They might turn in tomorrow or next week.

Its not fantastically paid work but they can afford to take unpaid time off. Its clean, warm and stable.

How can companies grow? I have enough sales to take on another 25 people but can't until I have the people in place.

We have had the same problem most Co I know have it! don't turn in Monday packing up at 4.30 for 5oclock finish. Wont work the extra 15min to finish the job to day even if offered an hours money, leave tools about, put batteries on charge before going home fat chance.

If you want more stable labor, you need to make them come to work. You might choose the carrot or the stick.

If you need them to grow, you might find the carrot more sustainable.

Mark it sounds like a weakness in the company management which has led to an endemic complacency in the workforce, if a few of them were sacked and replaced with agency staff it would probably shake things up a bit.

Years ago I used to employ people to do a throw away task. Other people in the same field were after the same labor pool.

I used to pay very very slightly more (like hardly anything, but more than the others) but more to the point, I used to do everything I could to make life easier for the people I was employing. Even little things like freebies here and there, or some beers at Christmass (which noone else would ever even consider)

The tiny amount it cost me earnt me multiples over in obtaining a stable honest crew.

YMMV obviously!

thats all changed so no they cant straight away and then if in a universal credit area that wait can be as long as 6 weeks or 8 weeks for a single payment for rent or housing

on another note pick on the ones that are worst offenders set an example by 2 sackings and state the reason why for everyone to know then watch what happens

look for new employees after the 2 sackings

I am lucky - I have a very good team now. We have had some right idiots in the past.
Best tip - NEVER advertise in the job centre! All you get are people being forced along to interviews for jobs they don't want.

We had one idiot fail to turn up 3 times in his first week. He was very apologetic - his sister had apparently been injured in the Ariana Grande bombing! I felt so sorry for him until one of my staff said she had been speaking to his sister on facebook - she had left an hour before it happened...........

The best though was the 30 yr old bloke who started with us then vanished 2 days later. His mother called in to say he wouldn't be coming back. His email to us was a classic. It basically stated that we must never attempt to contact him and if we did then he would take legal action against us! We decided to follow his advice and didn't get in touch about his 3 days wages!

If you come to work everyday you will get paid and wont lose another job...
Surely thats an incentive to pull your finger out your crack.

I have the opposite problem. Trying to convince the manageress that I'm more interested in completing a job, and know full well that I won't get paid extra time if I run over time... She just can't seem to grasp the concept. Just goes to show what the general mentality is like, these days. We're obviously the rarity rather than the rule. She worries more about me keeping to my allocated hours than I do.

There's a difference between running things with an iron fist, and just getting shut of, else educating, the dross.

When I was an IT contractor I never worked to set hours - often we would get paid for say 12 hours and end up working 14. Never took a lunch break in years.
Even when I worked in a petrol station on £2 an hour I would stay long after my shift. Longest shift I ever did was Christmas day - triple time - £6 an hour - and did a straight 28 hours without a single break on my own!
I have NEVER had holiday pay either - if you don't work you don't get paid! Sadly my staff just don't seem to get it

I have worked in horrendous places, places where the pay and conditions are terrible, you know the minute you start work for that company, no one has any goodwill towards the management/owners, and things like staying 15 minutes to finish a job or put tools on charge, no way. Another sign is a company constantly recruiting staff, there is a company here in Dublin which is basically recruiting all the time, the owner is a convicted ex-ira bomb maker, with a horrible reputation, i was in his workshop once about 15 years ago and the atmosphere was unbelievably bad. Its not always the workers fault.
