I would say No. If you plan on hammering something, do it on a separate piece of heavy metal. The anvils cast into vices are for the occasional convenience of light duty work.................... do I need an anvil part on the back?

I'm going to be repairing a car that has some rot so I'll have some panel fabrication I guess.
And then just to weld on.
I would say yes you need a vice also if you are going to need something for hammering on get a short piece of I beam, I gota 2ft by 8 inch one from a local firm for free out of their scrap skip.
