DIY woes

Need help from those of you more experienced please.

Redecorating this room in a house we’ve just started doing up.

Was two layers of wallpaper peeling off!

Stripping that back and found this mess.

So, expanding foam or tonnes of chemical mortar?

Use expanding foam to fill the gap and make good with plaster/mortar...

Agreed. You have to get a good seal between frame and wall before making the surface sound.

I would take all the plaster off and see what the whole problem is and go from there. Seems the window frame was cowboyed in to me! OOPS too late with my advice it seems!

Is that window even the right size for the aperture?

OTHERWISE its a new window to fit before you do anything

That frame is what is known as a rattling good fit.

looks like safe style uk to me , I now a few lads that used to fit for them and they always made the frame small , and trimmed it up .
Old frame externally beaded , never going to be as warm as a new frame though,
Gun foam the joint , new trim to the outer,
Browning or bonding to the missing plaster then a skim of one coat plaster,
If you struggle to get it flat then just sand it back,

One solution would be to use masking tape on the outer surface of the window frame, expanding foam to fill the gap and give it a degree of insulation, then trim off the surplus foam when it's set, remove masking tape, followed by UPVC trim to the outside.

Jewsons rent out thermal imaging cameras. Very useful for finding sources of cold.

Should have used a spacer each side when they fitted it. At least it would have been an acceptable bodge. Cowboys everywhere.

Check it again when its hot..it might be tighter I would echo whats been said and bang a couple of spacers on the window and foam it in if your not in the mood to buy new

New window isn’t an option neither is stripping all the plaster off as I’m not a plasterer!

you can get them bigger if need be but it points you in the right direction

otherwise its pack it with wood fill with a foam gun as sprays right amount then have a go at plastering

just make sure your walls wet enough before you plaster it use bonding first to fill holes or use multi finish

might as well not much damage you can do to it

Oh dear !

If the plaster at the sides is loose, pull that off so you have a solid foundation to build on.
I'd like that fixed solid before I started to fill the gap - maybe open the top window and put a long "hammer through" fixing through the frame and into the wall. Fill gap with ready-mix cement or expanding foam.
Get a tub of "superfine" filler from the local pound shop, smooth that on the wall to fill minor holes etc, sand flat when dry.
For finishing, the plastic beading around the window is easy to fit, cheap and available in different widths. Expect under a fiver for a 5m lenght - my local depot is called "The Plastics Centre - I guess you have something similar nearby.

Related - I bought a pen shaped Infra-red thermometer from Maplins for less than £20, very handy for checking insulation.

Yep the room next door, our room appears to be the same.

Got a whole day on it tomorrow.

The plaster has like hair in it, assume it’s some sort of lime plaster as it’s 12-15mm thick, white and as said has fibres in it.
Very very powdery fragile stuff.
