Might be worth doing as much prep as possible and getting a skim in for the day to hit all the reveals.

Yep I’m considering that especially as I also want to rip out the doorframe now.
I’m also wondering if it’s worth breaking this loose stuff right back to the edge of the window recess, then using some 12-15mm plasterboard, boxing out all round the window, then skimming over everything with plaster to tie it all back in.
After sorting the gap round the window that is. That’s priority. Getting the thing weather tight again.

Rip the loose out and hardwall it would be easier.
No great skill to filling with hardwall its easy to work with. Sand it down if you build up too much.
If you don't have to rip out to the corners the skim will have an easier time and be cheaper for you as he won't have to feather into the room walls and mess with angle beading.

I boarded over the cracks/missing plaster inside, went outside on the flat roof and expanding foamed the gap.
Trimmed back with a Stanley, fitted new UPVC trims with Sika EBT Adhesive/sealant.
Looks as good as it did before outside now and should stop moisture/weather from getting in.
If we stay here for a while I’ll have new windows put in when we get the pebbledash removed, insulated & rendered.

Options are to remove the lose PVA and skim, or if you have enough depth dot and dab PB, done carefully if your plastering is not up to much you should be able to fill.
TBH if the remeals are like that the whole lot is going to be a pig, serious option for budgets works is to learn to plaster yourself.

It's been on my to learn list for years.
Can render a wall and freehand screed a floor so shouldn't be hard.
One day il set up a few frames to plasterboard in the garden and teach myself.

I can get by, I'm not very quick and wouldn't set a big celling, when I did my first place I did most of the plastering the rooms improve as you move through the house! This one being a shed I would have struggled so I paid someone to do it.... I do hate paying for work I can do myself mind.

So do I, but it is almost impossible to "do a build", and continue to earn a living at the same time. I can patch plaster, have done in in many previous properties. But sometimes In the past I worked extra days, to pay trades, they just do the work so much quicker than I ever could.

Just a thought, in future dont peel the wall paper off if you dont want to see what it is hiding. I have to agree with the insulation board, if you have solid walls will pay for its self by reducing your heating bills.
And in my experience with old houses, once the paper is removed, you may need to just bite the bullet and get each room skimmed, or it will drive you nuts trying to get a decent finish on the walls with emulsion?

when weve all finished consider that the walls could be lime based so new materials arnt the best thought to be used
brad if you want the cheapest option
then its do it yourself your not doing full walls so not much damage can be done
to give you a pointer get a float take the sharp edge off the float and learn to put it on the wall its fun trying to scrape off the hawk with the float but dont over fill it a scoop of plaster is enough and float it onto the wall edging it on at 15 degrees on float to the wall and build it up
as goes for the finish plaster same way just dont mix it as dry as the bonding it will go off like crazy
but to float that up flick water onto wall and float as close as you can to the wall without causing the float to stick to the plaster its fun though gives that arm a work out though

I’ve got someone coming on the weekend to have a look.
We’re insulating the outside of the house at some point so not sure if it’s worth doing this room just yet.

Yup
2x1 tantalised battens 400c on the wall for ventilation and insulated plasterboard.
Could dab foil backed on the reveals if space it tight. Will help.

That's old houses for you. One I've been working on recently is 400+ years old. Ended up gutting it completely to replace 80% of the oak beams.
Having it done should help its resale value mind.

Bag of skim and a spread in for a day..he should sort that in a day and might cost £150 tops. Do a bit of overtime to sort his money and put this to bed
