remember if your gas pipe that you fitted leaks the installer will not pass your install but he may sort out the leak for you after all its only 1 join to the gas pipe its still a dry install until it connects up to the gas pipe

finding a fitter to join up will be your problem as some like the cream of the job

My garage is attached, flat roof, minimal insulation, draughty around the main door etc, so gets as cold as the garden.

Actually reminds me, the back boiler it replaced, I fitted. Back in about 1994/5 time. It was a Baxi that replaced an old 'Vulcan' iirc. I was lucky though, a chap I worked with in the RAF had just left and retrained to become Corgi regd. He came round and commissioned it. Mind you, he did condemn the old boiler!!!

Your also going to find it difficult to have any warranty when you get to the bit of filling in the benchmark and try registering it to get the building control certificate.

I'm sure telling them your competent but have no proof will be fine.

so a new boiler can be fitted and also the flue and all of the piping plumbed in

Yes you can do the lot and you can then try and find some one to sign it off and that person has to ensure it's all been done properly and the only way to ensure that is to start again, because if it does fail they are not going to have any defense, I for one wouldn't entertain it.

yes i do know, fitted my own boiler and got my gas safe mate to buy it and to pipe and comission it same as my gas fire . it packed in under warranty so valor sent someone out and they checked my paperwork tested the gas and flue and fixed it it went again and they sent someone out and the fitter criticised its been messed on with and not put back together properly . ohh yea it was one of your gas safe contractors that did it so now what err err .precisely

Don't put it in the garage unless you want to waste a lot of gas.
When the frost stat fires up at 5 degrees in winter at 3am you will regret it.

You'll regret it a lot more if the frost stat doesn't fire it up and stop it freezing.

If it is firing up and wasting a lot of gas then, assuming the frost stat is external to the boiler then it's probably missing the pipe stat which should be fitted in series with the frost stat to shut it down again once the pipes have a little bit of warmth in them.

most combi are fitted with a frost stat to protect it , conventional boilers dont so you could fit one yourself if required if fitted in a cold aria specialy if you go on your jollys in winter for a few weeks as your insurance wouldnt cover if you have a burst

@sg66 As you are GasSafe registered would you be happy to allow a non GasSafe plumber to do all the wet side work and connect it to the boiler? I assume that the fitting of the flue would also fall under the combustion side and therefore also mustn't be fitted by said plumber. However the core drilling of the hole for the flue (with all the correct clearances) isn't anything to do with the wet side or the combustion so anyone can do that task.
I fully understand that you personally maybe wouldn't want to proceed in those circumstances but can you see any reglatory issues?

Me personally no, and the rules of registration tell you your not supposed to, I do however know some that would.

I've come across boilers coming away from the wall and only hanging hanging on by the flue because the fixings in the bracket were into bugger all, so do I start by lifting the boiler of the wall to see how it's been fixed on ?

Heating pipes upto where boiler was going to live and domestic side but that would be it.

Would have no issues with hole for flue drilled correctly

Like I said earlier your best bet is fond some one local and have these discussions.

I did mean to add that whilst the regulations are a bind in my circumstances I completly and wholheartedly agree with the need for them. The standard of work done today by so called builders and other "trades" is often absolutly awful so with that in mind the average idiot who thinks they are good at DIY is a catastophe waiting to happen. I spent my working life adhering to MoD standards so I do regard myself as reasonably competent but I also appreciate that the rules are there for a reason. I could be the poor bugger visiting a house that a DIYer had fitted a gas boiler in on the day it blows sky high. I'm just trying to find the correct interpretation of the regs so that I can follow them and be safe (and legal).

@sg66 I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. Do you mean that the whole install, wet side, combustion side and knocking holes in a wall are soley the realm of a registered GasSafe plumber? I assume not as there are not enough in the UK to do that amount of work. As I said above I'm just trying to understand the demarcation lines so that I can talk to the Gassafe engineer with some understanding of the requirements.

its also been the same with corgy and gas safe too many dodgy ones even in that system

even ive told them to collect there tools and go

on the last one ex council owned so now owned by a housing association

i told yet again the plumber to collect there belongings and leave the property as he was going i made it very clear that i was reporting him

has the managers and the company managers scramberling like hell couldnt get to my house fast enough

it took 6 plumbers to sort out the issues the boiler failed the chimney fire failed as goes for my cooker they condemned that and capped it ( i expected that one )

the convos was really interesting to watch after wards as ive got the lot on cctv inside and outside of the house as i had both installed it shows everything including the comments made

it was passed the year before by the same company

as goes for the cooker well that was safer than there boiler as i serviced that just before the annual inspection happened

as goes for the boiler well that needed a new flue as was leaking it was also too short and back flowing back into the property the boiler was old that wanted alot of parts inside of it to get it back to a safe standared and to pass the flue regs

they even lowered the boilers heat output to get it to conform status on the flue regs ( it had a better heat output before they messed with it on both central heating and hot water output )

i can assure you theres alot of dodgy fitters within that system
