DIY alternative to WD40 ?

I've got 20 ltrs of red diesel and plenty of ATF so will experiment with a 50:50 mixture and see how that goes. I already buy WD40 in 5ltr containers from Screwfix but will try Duck oil when current stock runs out.

To protect new steel stock I buy in, I use a diesel & waxoyl mix. But any oily stuff that won't evaporate or completely run off will do. Thinned chainsaw oil, engine oil, whatever.

Water displacer is needed for wet things. I have to hide mine though as it gets used Willy nilly for everything otherwise.

If your using penetrating oil to free up seized nuts and bolts then a good home brew concoction is a 50:50 mix of ATF and acetone.

I came across this a while back and looked it up on the net. Some scientists have deliberately sized some nuts and bolts by soaking for a week in sulphuric acid then applied a variety of commercial and home brew fluids and measured the tourque required to free up. The ATF/acetone mix was a winner each time, plus much much cheaper.

I now have some in a wash bottle and can report it works a treat.

It's a funky reddish pink colour and tends to separate a little when stored, just give it a shake before use and I can report it realy does work. Give it a go and it will be interesting to see what some of you folks think

Better still you can buy dewatering oil - made for purpose suggested

Nope, no need to dewater something that's not wet. Put an oil/waxy coating on it when it's dry and it's good enough for steel stored indoors that might get a bit condensationy.

Save the dewatering fluid for.... dewatering

Dewatering oil is what stockholders use on box etc. It's also what I have used at a few fabricators as an employee ( often specified in terms by large manufacturers)

Sure. It even suggests that on the smith&allen tubs I buy. It obviously works as that but whats the point, unless the stuff is wet, you're wasting ££ buying a specialist "dewatering" / water displacing fluid to just oil stuff.

ive never priced the dewatering stuff but i could only guess its steep enough money.
like yourself any of the steel ive got stored is misted with a coat of used hydraulic oil, it keeps it for a long time in fairness as long as its stored inside.
the oil dosent affect the welds either, or not that i can see anyways.
cheap and cheerful tbh.

i bought 2 ltrs of it in a place called "sallys" or at least thats what i think it was called, its a kind of a hairdressers supply store job, they are a chain.
its difficult to get it off e bay to me here as nobody wants to post any amount of it over the water.
iirc it was £12 for 2 ltrs which i could only assume was no steal but as a trial it ill do for now, i know a crowd up near belfast that sell it in 15ltr drums for something round the £40 -50 mark.

I think (from my own use of it) that duck oil is a little better than wd40, I rate it very highly.
As to whether it's better than your mix I don't know as I haven't tried it, though I would expect your mix to work quite well.

i only really use the diesel in it to thin it out slightly because i use a siphon type spray gun to apply it and its not so fond of the thicker stuff but it thins it out nicely so as it dosent finish up as a thick layer of oil, i just mist the mill after i finish with it and then throw a towel over it to cover the bed and slides.
i also use it in a form of a store i have on anything that oil wont affect, it keeps the bolts, parts and such in good nick.

the duck oil i must try, i only know of one place in NI that actually has it in stock or that ive seen at least.
its not cheap either i see, but no dearer than WD so its worth the punt.

i have road tested stuff called pocket rocket, its no cheaper than the wd and altho it seems to leave a film (which ive got into my head, is more annoying than anything else) but it didnt seem to last as long as the wd either so i didnt invest again.

the acetone and the ATF is the next trial, altho id assume its best kept as a release agent and not a water displacer.
