Digital Micrometers and verniers etc ??

I need some digital gear so i can see the read outs better/easier. Are they as any good or not as accurate as standard ? Any makes to look at?

I personally have Mahr calipers and Mitutoyo micrometers.

At work we tend to have cheapo Amazon specials.

I took all mine in on Thursday to do some critical work because I trust them more than the work ones.

I checked calibration on mine and the work's stuff and they were both bang on. After I'd made the components I measured the critical features with both sets and again, they both reported the same measurements.

It pains me to say I but aside from the badge, there's no difference in accuracy. My only objective gripe with the cheap stuff is that they feel a bit rough when new and need to be disassembled & cleaned to run reasonably smoothly.

I got a Moore and Wright digital caliper a couple of years ago, a shade over 20 quid, it's been brilliant for everything I've needed.

Well wasnt expecting the cheap ones to be as good for accuracy, i expect build quality not to be as good though. i will be checking over engine parts for tolerances want it fairly accurate.

I looked at prices on the named makes and it is now then a thing on cost for this as a set up will be between around £400-£500 for quality to maybe £150 for the budget.

Bought my lad a Moore & Wright Basic at Christmas. Mainly for his 3D printing works. A shade under £40 then with 20% off. From Zoro.

Mitutoyo... they are reliable and accurate and nice to use

Look at measuring tools from the perspective of if I make this wrong whats the cost of making it again, not I saved a few pennies when I bought it

I would have bought Mitutoyo, but over a grand for 3 calipers was a bit more than I was willing to pay just to rebuild one engine.
I paid £85 for a second hand 50mm Moore & Wright from fleebay just a couple of weeks ago which was around half the price from new.

Can you say the same for the Chinese ones?

Probably, to be honest. But I'll always second guess the cheap ones, Mitutoyo I'm more confident to trust first time, every time. That's also how I justify Fluke meters when Brymen would really be fine.

That and they'll last forever, I don't buy things with selling them in mind but I like the idea that if I am ever done with it I can sell it or pass it on rather than throw it away.

As for micrometers, the Quantumike has a coarser screw so it moves faster, I don't think any other brands do that.

Another vote for Mitutoyo, I have a couple of them and they have outlasted all the pretenders by decades. That said there is nothing wrong with cheapies for in the truck or yard workshop.

I keep my old cheapies for scribing lines.
