Where are you buying from?

When I look there's only £3 difference. £3 on £200 odd is negligible.

IIRC I picked them up off ebay a few years ago, they were about £30 new - some retailer clearing out old stock I think.
I'd have to check the model, but 16EX rings a bell. It wasn't their top end ones, but they are more than good enough for me.
I don't think they were that much more expensive if you bought them from any of the usual outlets at the time.

I didn't want to risk buying a cheap Mitutoyo as there were/are too many fakes, and I certainly couldn't trust myself to spend £100+ on something I could drop at some point.
The Mahr ones are nice and don't seem to attract as much interest.

Always worth looking out for Mahr and TESA gear. It's not as common as mitutoyo but usually even better quality.

I have a set of those, and agree their descent for the money but I wouldn’t use it for anything which requires precision measurement, great for doing general diy work though.
I remove the battery when not in use

The Lidl ones I got years ago ran on the original battery for about 5 years, never removed it at all!

I was quite shocked as I had a set of the blue M&W ones previous and the battery was always flat in those if you forgot to remove it after use. Wasn’t impressed by those at all.

The Lidl ones measure up perfectly when you stick a mic standard in there. Very impressed with them for the money, but they do feel a bit rough around the edges compared to my starrett set.

i have a few cheap pair and also a few quality mitsy ones which only get used on clean stuff or final cuts so they dont get mucky anything 100 percent accurate gets done with a micrometer

Had Moore & Wright digital caliper and digital angle gauge block. Both have failed. Mitutoyo all the way these days. I have a few Quantumikes and a 150mm caliper. All bought from H Roberts during various sales. The mitu caliper is often copied by the Chinese as others have said, so buy from a reputable dealer! Also got myself a Tesa dial caliper the other day as I was fed up changing batteries in the faulty Moore & Wright (which won’t switch off!)

You wouldn't use verynears for anything precision anyway - always a mic.

Then again, for us chumps whittling down lumps of metal in the garage, micrometer accuracy is a but of a pipe dream.

vernier is a measurment not a vernier caliper

Regularly turn things to 0.01mm for bearing seats. Any less tolerance and I have to resort to emery tape.

Given that most small (<20mm) bearing seats call out for +3um to +9um for a proper fit, I'd say you do need fairly accurate measuring tools.

Sorry brad you’re in cockoo land
They spray welding you did for me and decided to machine was oval so your machine can’t achieve the accuracy you think you’re doing
On a lathe you’re measuring the high spots with the mike anvils a average size if you will over the ridges
You need to stop watching rob renz and learn what these measurements actually are and what is actually attainable

The actual vernier scale of measurement was invented by pierre vernier then applied to anything that needed accurate measurements like calipers sextants & other devices etc, I have cheapo digital calipers on the tailstocks of my lathes & are great for accurate depth drilling I also use them for parallel scribing along an edge of parts, & as said above they're a bit rough but accurate ernough, I have mitutoyo, baty & moore & wright all excellent calipers but the best quality ones [& my favourite] I have are a set of swiss made tessa with rechargeable button cells & charger & operates opto- electronically with a thin glass scale built onto the beam ,a really beautiful instrument,having said all that it all depends what you need them for & what you are making, precision for precisions sake is a waste of time if it's not required & at the end of the day if your chasing tenths my choice is always the micrometer with the constant pressure clutch .

Metric:- 3.10 - 6.5 - 9.70 - 12.50 - 15.80 - 19.00 - 21.90 - 25.00 - 50.00 - 75.00 - 100.00mm
Calibrating this way checks for linear errors along the scale and cyclic ones around the thimble.
