Diesel heater for shed

what size would I need to keep a mostly full 3mx2.5m tin shed 'comfortable'?

I've got a greenhouse heater in there that keeps the internal temp above the dew point so condensation is all but eradicated at the moment, however when working in there I'm either using a hideously costly fan heater, or having to light the forge just outside the doors which id like to avoid for obvious reasons.

Would an 8kw diesel heater be worth a go? Claims to burn half a litre and hour at full chat, which works out about 11p an hour less than the fan heater costs, even more of a saving when I get derv from a mate that scraps cars

I'll be getting round to insulating at some point, or atleast finishing the insulating anyway

For various reasons I've gone this route for my garden office

Same style I had in the Disco, I wanted self contained to make install cheaper

Wrapped the exhaust in 300 degc heat wrap, highest I've seen the burner is 205

Additional bit of wood is due to floor not being finished

Bit of finishing to do on the wall, but it's been on every day this week without issue

Exhaust is at cat height and there is a direct correlation between me having a quiet life and the cat not getting burned

Running on kero, will strip it down once...

Despite the multiple expert opinions, when I removed it to finish the floor there was not any scorching or burning from the exhaust

Was very easy to overheat the space

cheers for that. i was thinking of mounting mine on a steel shelf up out the way, but diverting the outlet down to shin level so it blows the heated air out between the drill/grinder bench and the lathe, with the exhaust being routed out the wall at the back.

the one ive got my eye on is a smaller design but still boasts 8kw, remote activation etc and 240v or 12v power options.

Moved into a proper office this year so the office is now storage until I sort it, then I plan on using the space as a little workshop

8kw is a bit of marketing push, mine even had 5kw stamped in the inside!
heats my living room / kitchen very nicely and cost next to nothing so far, my uncle had a heating oil tank to clean, so gave me a good 80 litres of kero, i just had to leave the dirty dregs in the bottom of each drum,
That lasted all last winter and most of this winter so far

I tapped into the 240v - 12v supply to parallel a car battery in, Im glad i did, we had a power cut recently and not only did it keep us warm, but apparently if the power cuts out while its hot, with no fan to help cool the circuit board it can fry it

i had considered using a 12V car battery charger until i saw the 240V option which just makes life a little bit easier

In truth, it won't be 8kW - more like 4, but I think even a 2kW heater would probably do the job. (I had a 2kW one in my ~8' x 10' uninsulated, block built shed and it was enough. I've got an "8kW" one in my slightly insulated 30m^2 garage and it is more than enough.)

Spares for these heaters are dirt cheap, and very easy to fix

Running on Kero full chat 8 hrs a day they don't need cleaning ever. 5000 hours on one of mine. If you are using a longer or restricted exhaust they do need cleaning a lot more. Avoid long exhausts if possible.
And 4kw is the best you can.hope for. Running costs dirt cheap. About 5p per kw/h v 25p or more for electricity.
Diesel will burn slightly hotter than kero but not as clean. Another myth is that fuel.pumps wear out as kero is too dry. Load of nonsense.
And don't mess about with batteries. A 12v 30amp £25 power supply is perfect.

That will give you a reasonable benchmark of how much heating you actually need.
These heaters work best when run at full power, as running them at low power most of the time means they tend to soot up.

i think the fan heater is only 1200w, possibly 1500W, and it will keep me warm, if its pointed at me, but if i move to another corner i become cold again unless i move the fan.

i usually use it when im on the lathe as i can sit it on the welding bench and point it at my back as im usually stood at the lathe for a while, i dont mind when im welding as i normally have a hoody and a welding jacket on so dont notice the cold as much

i had considered using a 12V car battery charger until i saw the 240V option which just makes life a little bit easier

I now have a 240 volt to 12 volt PSU and a stand by small car battery that is topped up charging at the end of most months as we have unreliable mains. Having been told of heavily carboned burners .

I now leave the 240 to 12 volt DC PSU on over night as I set the controller to off , so it is powered right down through the cooling cycle with no unburnt fuel still in the heater .

As sooting up has been mentioned I thought that this YouTube channel would be useful. The guy has an excellent series of videos on many problems and repairs that crop up on Chinese diesel heaters.
