I have probably put this in the wrong section, but never mind, I am sure I saw a link recently for rent free acetylene portapack acetylene cylinders somewhere in the Midlands. I have tried to find the details, but failed. Please can anyone recall who it was or know any details.

I read somewhere that if you already have a cylinder you can exchange it at HSS but I have not seen anyone doing them deposit free.

Aside from the HSS thing* the only recent mention of rent free acetylene i can think of is... http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=344576&postcount=84, United Welding Supplies are advertising Albee cylinders which'd make 'em Air Liquide agents


*My experiences of HSS shops and welding gases from a year or 2 ago...

There are prices in the gas suppliers thread (last page) but phone your local store first.

Out of curiosity i did when HSS were first mentioned on the forum- prices mentioned were significantly cheaper than standard BOC rates for BOC products, possible as i used to get my oxy acetylene from a breakers yard in Creek road Greenwich (now a block of flats unfortunatly) that'd rent oxy by the pallet and sub it for some cash on the side

Gases (and welding gear) are not carried by all HSS branches, my local one put me onto the closest whose prices were very different from those posted in the the gas suppliers thread. I did make a note of the prices but haven't kept it as they were ludicrously expensive, the bit that stuck out was the weekly rental which was almost as much as monthly BOC rent (which in turn is more expensive than yearly BOC standard rate rental).

HSS pricing may vary a lot by region or the other possability is that either SpaffMonkey or myself were incorrectly informed by HSS staff...

Thats right Hotrodder United welding supplies , Hitchin , Albee bottles , I got the prices wrong oxy £144 and Acety £199 to buy bottles , refill £28 oxy and £65 Acety no rent at all , gauges on the bottles apparently too ! all + VAT as well , still better than rent !

Do you remember what cylinder sizes those prices refer to? They're only listing argon and argon/CO2 mixes on the site (unless i've missed something) and a choice of 2 sizes. In the interests of laziness do you know what the score is regarding cylinder testing (schedule, price etc)?

Thanks for the info. I wil give them a ring and see what they come up with, I cannot justify the ongoing rental, but for a one off cost may be worthwhile

I will endavour to post the flyer tommorow for you , I have it on the wall in the office , for small users I think it might be worth a go , I rent from BOC at the moment but I may swap to this idea , i dont use the oxy / acety a lot , but always a call for it !

Cheers. While it'd be useful don't put yourself out, easy enough to call 'em myself. It's occasional O/A use for me too, i'm currently renting from BOC but ditched the acetylene for propane. Very nearly went with a deposit/rent free oxy from (i think) southwest gas but their local agent was such hard work i gave up

Spoke to a HHS shop last week, told there was no Acetylene in the country Stopped by the same shop on Friday to be told it wasn't a problem, only the really small ones are hard to source

Called Leeds, they told me to call before going, and if they didn't have it in, they would later that day or the next.

Biggest Acetylene they do are F and G. Oxy is W. I forget the prices but they were OK.

As for rent. Hire them and take yours back a day or two later

The rent free cylinders are from Air Liquide, under their Albee Flame banner.

Acetylene is a 10ltr bottle
Oxygen is a 11ltr bottle

Both have built in regs with a 3/8bsp outlet for direct connection to a flash back arrestor.

A trolley is also available.

Due to be available 2nd week of March.

TBH i probably would've written off HSS anyway Shox. While the closest branch to me that stocks the stuff isn't that far as the crow flies it'd be the journey from hell even by sarf London standards. While they're not as conviently located as BOC there's two Albee stockists (one of which appears on the main Air Liquide agent list too) that are much easier to get to

yep, DA stuck in France whilst the relevant paperwork is cleared.

Had word from the rep (Ashley) that they will be available just before or just after easter.
