I think that an arch linux review was what made me think about getting familiar with it.I've no idea if you install truenas on Linux but I highly recommend playing with Linux on a server
This weekends fun was installing Arch Linux on a Surface Pro 4, for fun

It took me a couple of false starts, but I knew I was making it hard with the surface pro
The guided installer is pretty good, my issues were around WiFi which I would assume is not an issue on a server?
Currently uses about 2gb of ram with Firefox while watching a YouTube video so it is incredibly resource light

You boot truenas from a USB stick and install it from there. It's based on Debian Linux so will install a variant of that for you (and manage the Linux updates for you).

If you want to use it as a NAS, just install something like truenas and connect to the shared folders using your device's file browser. I use windows server for this but that is what I'm trained on and I use windows server features that you don't need.
You will then have a web based interface to manage the NAS OS.
I remember saying that you had installed the command line version of windows server back in your original post.
I did see and reply to one of your Facebook posts. I would avoid those groups. They are usually full of people who do everything the most complicated way and think the latest hardware is required. This forum is much more realistic.
