What do you guys use for degreaseing ?

Brake cleaner degenerates into phosgene gas when it gets hot. Probably best use something else.
Its the same stuff according to my supplier who sells me a gallon labeled brake, clutch and carb cleaner!!!
It may turn into phosgene (although I can't find any chemical relationship as to why and would love a link that explains it) however once evaporated and wiped away there is nothing left. I am still here and of course you use fume extraction don't you?

The use of brake cleaner has been discussed a few times on here, chlorinated solvents are the one to look out for, but its seems unlikely that you will find anything retailing in the uk that contains chlorinated solvents, personally I've never felt the need to routinely degrease everything before it gets welded, and have never understood the obsession that some people seem to have with degreasing everything before welding, it may have some value in high end work but not for general stuff, flammable chemicals and welding equipment are best not mixed.

I find that brake and carb cleaner appear to be essentially the same thing.
I buy brake cleaner in 5l containers which is very economical with a sprayer - aerosols are a ripoff by comparison.
As to the gas, there was a massive discussion on it and it seems that if you buy it from the UK it'll be OK. TIG Paul has just done a link while I type...
But be careful to keep the stuff away from any welding/grinding areas as it does burn quite nicely!

What about cellulose thinners to get the oils and grease off metal before welding, is that OK or safe?
I generally soak a rag in the stuff then wipe down the tube, then let it evaporate, open door type thing and the rag and can well away from the welding area before I start.

thanks for all the replys, its mainly aimed at alloy tig welding, I work we have everything acid pickled before welding, obviously in my garage doing small jobs this isn't going to be possible, and to any one using thinners its no good when you want to weld alloy as already said it leaves a residue.
