Haha - already there. I have four different strengths of reading glasses and two magnifying glasses in the workshop!

Does remind me of one our standard engineers telling me about a question he could not believe from our (now ex-) quality manager - what was the difference between internal and external calipers?

He explained the external ones were waterproof for use outside where it might rain . . .

I'm after one of these, cheap but accurate, that'll do say 35mm or 50mm. Something a bit better quality than the plasticy 1" max depth tyre gauge ones.

i lie they are the lidl ones but same thing, they are accurate, that is not the problem with them. ?Maybe I need to invest in better batteries and not the 10 for a £10 ones

Get the batteries from Tesco ..they have a large turn over of them so the chances are they are newer stock and far more reliable . My Lidl digi callipers all had off buttons , but don't like being left out in a 2 oC or lower temp mancupboard as most of these button batteries will die quite quickly at these temps whether switched on or not .

If you have the hard plastic case for these digital mic's there is usually space enough for you to drill a space in the bottom half put a floor under it , to insert two spare batteries and have a twist to cover lid over them so you always have a spare batter to hand .

I am after a decent set of the above, any recomendations?
Not mega money, they must turn off completly with the off button! I am sick of replacing the batteries in the current sets I have. Apparently they dont actually ever turn off completly so the batteries drain!

I've made a few current drain measurements on some digital calipers and a tyre depth gauge, and they mostly draw around 21uA (microamps) when on and the display is showing something, with an average across all the types of 21.4 microamps, and about 1.7 microamps less when they are turned off using the on/off button, or when the display turns off through lack of use. The exception was the Mitutoyo CD-6"CP, which draws 4.1 microamps when on, and 1.9 microamps when switched off, or when the display turns off. There doesn't appear to be a third "deep sleep" state on any of the calipers tested.

Assuming the nominal capacity is 115mAh for LR44 cells, and 170mAh for SR44 cells, this should give the average unbranded caliper a battery life of ~243 days off LR44 and ~360 days off SR44 cells, assuming the calipers spend most of their life turned off.

An SR44 cell in the Mitutoyo calipers will last over 10 years in the "off" state.

I have a similar one to that with a sharp needle on the end; again it's accurate enough but bottoms out about 32mm. They're used as 'pit gauges' on pipeline corrosion. Like this (not my company):

I have Moore & Wright calipers for myself, they're good and accurate but batteries die in them over time, so I have to store them without.

A few months ago I've been getting some Insize ones from Cutwel for work. They're surprisingly good, better than the M&W ones, with auto-on/off and nice clear numbers. They feel very tight and precise, approaching Mitutoyo levels.
