Damm Locking Wheel nuts

my old vectra sri140 ended up with too many problems and too costly to keep on the road.

i hadn't long fitted a new water hose £100 from GM
4 new tyres 9 month ago £200

and was offered £150 for scrap. Yer right.....

ive broke it up myself, now here is the problem.....

my mate damaged the locking wheel nut tool.

when undoing the front wheels.

so couldn't get the rear locking wheel nuts undone.
tried breaker bar, tried air buzzer.
in the end i took the rear suspension off with the wheels attached.
lucky they are independent suspension. and not an axle.

anyway i have laid the wheels between two horses
and welded a 17mm nut on top of the locking wheel nut.
all it seems to do it break a piece of the wheel nut off with the welded nut.
i am stuck with suspension arms, hubs, discs and calipers attached to the alloy wheels.

Argggggggg !!!!!!!!!!!! what to do....

this is the type in question.


i wonder is a mag drill would let me drill it out enough
i would have to clamp a piece of plate on top of the wheel.

The reason you keep snapping the weld is due to ferrite dilution in your weld.

Are you MIG welding with A18 wire?

You need to MMA weld with 312 or 309 rods (or any stainless rods you can get your hands on!)

I had to get the nuts off the wife's L200 as the key was missing when we bought it. I used an Irwin bolt extractor. Just brayed the holy hell out of it on to the nut with a lump hammer then rattle gun wizzed it off. The extractor set was about 30 quid off the bay and well worth it.

You cannot use Irwin sockets on the GM Mcgaurd wheel nuts in question. They have a hardened spinning outer collar (evil things!)

yes using mig welder, the wire ive had for a while.
15kg mild steel 0.6mm

i do have an arc welder, cant remember what amp it is...
something like 130 or 140 amp.. old blue clarke one so will be AC

1/2 inch box section
Stick welded with a stainless rod up the inside
Big adjustable when it is still hot normally works

Cut the outer shell off and hammer a socket on to the middle bit

yer the outer collar makes it a nightmare.
but i guess it stops people nicking ya wheels.
just makes it hard when you cant get them off yourself lol
Note to self : Dont let stupid mate use locking wheel nut tool ever again.

so i either need to get some SS wire for mig.

or some SS rods for arc welder.

if i got some SS wire for the mig, what gas do you use for SS mig welding.

as im using argonshield universal for mild steel.

You cannot use Irwin sockets on the GM Mcgaurd wheel nuts in question. They have a hardened spinning outer collar (evil things!)

The ones on the Mitsubishi ARE the mcgaurd one with the collar and it got them off. You just need to hammer the extractor on with enough force so it crimps the collar tight.
I got all 4 off in 15 mins

Never again will I fit locking nuts. I'd rather some ba&£ard nicked the wheels after many failed knackered locking nut keys giving me pain.

ive never had a problem with any, I think most problems are a result of people over tightening them

Simple way not to feck the locking tool up,locate it first before pushing breaker arm on it

i think the problem was
my stupid mate doesn't have an ounce of common sense.
and didn't hold the breaker bar at 90 degree to the socket/removal tool.
so as he tried to undo them he was rocking the removal tool
instead of turning it.

My daughter had two new front tyres on her Corsa a couple of years ago and when it came to MOT it needed brake work. I tried to get the front wheels off but the locking nuts were too tight so I told her to take it back to the tyre place. They took the wheel nuts off knackering them up at the same time and fair play they admitted fault and replaced the set and fitted them to a reasonable torque so I could undo them to fit new discs.

But do wheels not get pinched because of locking wheel nuts? Certainly a big market for secondhand wheels but the average theif would be caught quick with documented evidence as ebay, gumtree and facebook are the main sources of advertusing. maybe that's the real reason? I also like to think most wouldn't buy pinched stuff, you know when it has been.

Quite often the tyres are worth more than the alloy wheels now days. It's rare new cars come with steelies anymore and the breaker market is now saturated. Rare alloy wheels are worth something, common all garden ones not a lot.
