Fitted one on the windscreen, next to an A pillar.
Rather than remove paint for the earthing point, I ran a wire from a local earth point. Splayed the wire and fixed that to the A pillar with double sided tape and fixed the aerial to that.
Not on a Golf, but the principle is the same.

I fitted one to the wife's (classic) Mini and it seems to work very well. Put it on the front screen hidden by the rear view mirror. I can't remember an earth being needed, but if it had, I certainly wouldn't have removed paint to do it.

The earth connection serves at least one purpose and that is a power reference for the inbuilt pre-amplifier. I suspect that the stick on types are half waves, so need no ground plane but those which aren't and do, need a low impedance connection. A length of wire is not that, although of course a length of wire itself can actually work as a counterpoise.

No replaced it with a Chinese android one. Fitted a few in the past but this is first one with DAB

The other useful option is a DAB/FM amplified splitter. That allows the existing aerial to feed the DAB input. Not quite as efficient as a dedicated aerial, but sometimes compromises have to be made. The BMW motorcycles for instance, where fitting a dedicated aerial is impractical. The factory whip works well for both.

I fitted one of those to my Fiat Doblo and found, whilst it worked, the number of DAB stations and consistency of signal wasn't as good as the windscreen foil mount.
I fitted one of those it works brilliantly

is there a prefered good quality brand or seller to use ? i susepct many are made in china cheapies?
I've fitted 2, a Kenwood one that came with the stereo and works brilliantly. And a cheapo Amazon special that's about as much use as a bent coat hangar.
Doesn't help with the preferred brand, but it appears the cheap ones are just that.

hmm yeah thought so , my kenwood came with a screen mount and isnt very good , dunno if the fact its a heated screen makes it worse?

They all seem to come out of the same factory. However some work on arrival and some don't, it is the luck of the draw. Get it from Amazon and there won't be an issue to return it. I have seen about a 10% fault rate.

These ones are made in Italy, at least according to the label. I worked out the original brand once (Calearo?) but they are often sold without a brand sepcified.
