expose a bit of wire at each end and wire it up to a car battery (or a welder?)

when it gets hot enough the wire should pull right out the back as the rubber melts around it?

I did try pulling the wires, that may work but then there will be holes throughout, and the extra support from wires might not be a bad thing.

For first shoe, most of trimming with tyre ball, then mini diamond dremmel wheel to cut a slot where the wires exposed, few mm deep and filled with more rubber. I'll hope to try it tomorrow. Lots of tape to glue up.

I am quite annoyed As you can see above it sort of looks like its been stuck together with clear chewing gum. Not good and probably wont stay stuck all that well. It was an unopened tube of glue but it seems they do go off! Contains xylene and di-isocyanate, so I guess it has reacted with itself with just the xylene keeping it from being solid. Wasnt filling gaps properly and looked rubbish.

Opened a fresh new tube tonight, very liquid, filled the gaps nicely, much better stuff.

I should have ground the old stuff out of the wire slot but, it will do..

Been too busy outside to get anything done!
Started on the right shoe. Old pic, I since ground back the kevlar and removed all of the steel wires. Its a bit thinner, but good for a test.

Toes didnt stick perfectly so glued and taped them up again, should be useable tomorrow.
Got the old patches off the Velocities and going to use the proper Vibram Edge rubber for these.

Used the contact cement this time. After trimming, added a bead of the rubber glue around the edge to protect it.

Tried the ClimbX tonight. Left is good, it has the reinforced ply. The right, extremely soft with no ply.

Will try Velocities tonight.

My experience in car tire cutting. First, rough cutting with angle grinders (a lot of fuss and smoke). Contour fit on the belt grinder. Bevels with a flap abrasive disc. Removal of excess thickness with a cord - splitting in a vise (Samson tears the lion's mouth). Rubber glue - 2K from Tip-Top (blue). There is a video on my channel (castor wheels)

Very impressed with the dedication here as always. If at first you don't succeed etc. Would these shoes have otherwise been a throwaway item then?

How do you know they don't work, during the climb, by feel or afterwards by inspection?

Serious question now, when you climb do you have to have insurance? If you slipped and hurt someone etc could any claim be made null and void as you were wearing "DIY" shoes? Just thinking of our blame culture.

He says on his way into work with the beginnings of a TV bracket for someone's 50" new telly...if that fails...

The gyms all tell you don't walk underneath people on the wall and don't climb too close to them, because there's a good chance they're gonna fall even wearing unmodified shoes.

Hot recommend 2K rubber adhesive from Rema Tip-Top, with blue pigment. They stick together conveyor belts. Best cold vulcanization I know. Not budget friendly but... In shoes, you can pour wet sand in a bag or kinetic clay, for better pressure from the outside.

That Rema stuff is good. I use their bead sealant and the tyre repair stuff.

Insurance, I assume is covered by the climbing gym for inside. Falling is expected and generally safe.

Throw away at £50-150 every few months, with new Scarpa ones being excessively ground down at factory.. half used from new.

I will soon get back to other projects

If the glue fails, the patch peels off from the back due to flexing at the ball. The important bit around the toes will generally only see compression so glue wont fail there.
As for if they work, you soon get fed up of your feet sliding off! I have that problem with the new pair and is part of why Im resoling the old ones.

Thanks I didnt know a 2k version existed. I use their 1 part tyre cement for puncture repairs. Do you know the cure time for that?

I waited about a day before removing the clamps. The manufacturer's data sheet is more useful than my poor memory anyway.
