Curiousity thread - what's the most money you have ever heard of a welder making?

Mate earns £600 per day on the oil rigs but this is the highest rate and as he is also a dive master he is on this rate, BUT.

From what he has said, they have dropped the rates significantly over the last few years because of the free movement of people around the world and they can just as easily import workers from lesser countries and working under our regulations would be bliss for them, and they will do such work for much less money and our off shore industry has had to drop prices to stay in regular work.

The rate is for the diver who does everything, as its easier to train a diver to weld than a welder to dive. What you also neglect to mention is the month living in a decompression chamber, breathing helium oxygen mix.....

So they turn up everyday, feel like hell, don't get much done, make everyone else sick, some of those have asthma or other lung diseases and end up off sick because of one persons selfish attitude? You have no clue...attitudes like yours is why stuff like the Spanish flu ran rampant, also why SARS etc ran rampant, people who wouldn't stay at home to let the outbreak die out and instead were spreading it...

If anyone is seeing the world as they want it to be, its you...binary black and white world view...let me guess you see someone who refuses to do a job due to H&S concerns as less worthy than someone who "just gets on with it".....give yourself a shake...we don't like in the 1800s anymore...people have a right to go to work and come home safe, not come home with injuries or end up with workplace diseases...

Wow, seems like I've touched a bit of nerve here which is pretty impressive giving this all came from me saying I thought 2 kids had done well to go their entire school lives and never taken a day off. There also seems to be a bit of a hang up on the term worthy which I never used. Not sure why there is a need for you to be pointing your finger at me.

We are a very diverse species, there will always be people who don't get ill(I'm one of them) so the fact they turn everyday isn't making anyone else sick it's just the way they are, there will always be people who sneeze once and take two days off.

there is some good money out there but most of it comes with bigger catches. occasionaly i get offerd some very tasty jobs, the downside is you have about 30 seconds to decide if you can take the job on and about 10 minutes to get on the road. and it'll be at a time and in a place where no one wants to go for the fun of it.

Just back from a all night job.
We had to take over a install, the first contractor had failed to do full continuous welds on brackets.
So t whole job had to be re done. At customers expense.
The 2 welders, 2 safety/ "gofers" will cost £3,000.

They arrived at 17:00, set up and were welding by 18:00 and all done by 06:30 and all away home by 07:00.

The job they have done is fantastic, a good job well done.
