Curiousity thread - what's the most money you have ever heard of a welder making?

Welders earning 10 quid an hour makes menwonder what incentive there is to train as a welder when my job requites no real qualifications and no major training, i spend most of my time doig random minor maintenance jobs and quality checks and have the choice of an air conditioned office if i get the time...and im approaching £16 and hour...£24 an hour for working on after a shift and £32 and hour on a sunday overtime...

Welding rust bucket cars for me. ***** job one of the worst i can bet most folk will agree with in welding. But good money. around £50ph for me, shame it cant be all the time otherwise i would do it again but its getting the work regular. just did it weekends then.

Oh they tried to get freebies and did at first but then i started proper mates rates as they started to take the ****, you know `oh can you just weld this quick` etc etc

They realised that i was still cheap to keep there cars on the road ( not the £50ph ) got a fair few crates of Bow aswell lol.

We've got a friend locally who likes a drop of Bow and she can handle it too. On one of her big birthdays her other half asked what she wanted and she said "Pallet of Strongbow" so that's what she got

my kinda woman by sounds of it lol.

There is a local chap who does a lot of fencing and tree surgery/stump removal etc. he has a had a spade made for the job but he keeps snapping the head off. I see him coming up the drive and he has a bottle of Bow in hand...i know what he wants before i open the door lol

It's only 30yrs ago we were told robots would be doing everything and we'd all be on 3day weeks jollying it up.

Whats happened, sure they've taken some of the repetitive and mundane work away from a human. But what about the 1 guy watching the bot doing the work of 10, 20 people. He doesnt get a reasonable wage, he gets paid 8ph 'as the bot does it all'....and were're all working mores hrs than bck then for less

As far as I can see, Industry 4.0 isn't so much about eradicating human labour but more so a deeper level of integration and control. Its hardly going to be a topic for the smaller factories and Job in shops who specialise in one offs and bespoke work but for large scale production.

A Kuka robot with a ESAB machine, that is seamlessly connected to a Armada press brake and a Hypertherm plasma cutting table. All able to be controlled and overseen by someone with an app on a smart device.

The problem is with robotics is it has pretty much deskilled the job entirely so they are not likely to pay someone top dollar to simply load/unload and oversee it unless they can bring more to the party like programming or maintainance.

Mechanisation is different to robotics, for example Tractor units and Turntables only aid in producing a higher overall quality, they still require a skilled welder in operation

My last employer had to get a welder in for a day (10 hour shift) on site and he cost £500 + VAT . But he was really good and had it all done in 6 hours. Still paid him for the whole day though. He came fully kitted with a van etc
We also had to get in 2 Erectors from the agency . £30 an hour each and they came with just hard hat, high viz and boots.
Spoke 2 words of English (yes/no) and didn't know one end of a podger from the other

The way to do it is to aim to stay in the industry but get on to the QC side.
It costs a bit to get qualified but heading in the direction of welding specialist/technologist/Engineer.
Welding inspection (cswip 3.0/3.1/3.2) and if you've really got ambition going for metallurgist.
These areas of technical welding give you big leverage to go out and make good money.

Mate earns £600 per day on the oil rigs but this is the highest rate and as he is also a dive master he is on this rate, BUT.

They only earn this rate when they are diving and the rate drops on non diving days, they often work 12 hour + on underwater work by rotating men throughout the day.

He gets accommodation, food, and his washing done as part of his package which is standard on most oil rigs, and he gets a say in where he works and will not work in any of the dodgy areas of the world as they don't have stringent working hours for deep sea divers like the UK and Europe does.

From what he has said, they have dropped the rates significantly over the last few years because of the free movement of people around the world and they can just as easily import workers from lesser countries and working under our regulations would be bliss for them, and they will do such work for much less money and our off shore industry has had to drop prices to stay in regular work.

Well I'll tell you what the steel electors are getting from the agency, £130/140 a day.

So the kid who catches xyz flu/cold etc off those 2 and develops pneumonia, ends up in hospital for 3 months is less worthy than someone who doesn't have a clue when to stay home and not infect the rest of us?
Thinking like that, that has resulted in UK productivity being near the bottom compared with Germany and Japan...

I think you read what you wanted to read in my post, I didn't say they were less worthy all I said was for me they were the most impressive awards as it showed 5 years of dedication and it wasn't something that could improved in the last 2 years of school like exam results. Me saying that is absolutely no different to any school awarding academic kids but not the ones who aren't. In a simple measurement of attendance yes someone who is off for monthes isn't a good just in the same way that in a simple measurement of academic exams they pigeon hole people as being less intelligent.There was also a young girl who got an award for her upbeat nature, she has had operations and was proud of the fact she was back in school after 8 days on the last one. She came into the hall in a wheel chair but was able to walk to the stage, she is the only kid ever to win that award twice.

To say that a mindset where you just get on with things lowers productivity is a complete load of tosh. I full understand that kids can't always affect how they are physically but kids who are off every other week with a cold or feeling a bit under the weather won't be any different when they are adults.

I will happily stand by the fact that I would rather employ someone who turns up everyday that someone who thinks they are doing all their colleagues a favour by having 2 days off for a cold.

Well I'll tell you what the steel electors are getting from the agency, £130/140 a day.

Yeah, noticed before that the agency rate seems to change dependant on how "desperate" you are. Book them a couple of weeks before and it's £x per hour . Book em day before and it's £x + 25-30%.
No doubt the operative gets the same from the agency though .

I pay £1000 a day for a 3 man erection gang.
(For a 10 hour day) I've known them a long time, and they are great value for money.
Then it's £150 for the 3 for digs per night.
If it's a big job , then we will price it at those rates , and if they finish early we split the difference. They have pretty much always finished early .
I've always found that if you pay a person right (workshop or site ) , then they are happier and spend less time moaning and more time working*

I have the odd job that comes in which works out at £115 per hour, which I was rather happy at...unfortunately, I do about 3 of those a year and the rest tend to be welding up the families cars/lawnmowers/whatever they broke this week at 2 biscuits and a cuppa per hour....
