Ok, I've knocked up an stl file for anyone who'd like a 3d view. I haven't figured out how to cut sectors out of the rotor and the slots in the swash cylinder could do with some tweeking. Also, dunno how to upload an stl file here.

Getting there. Had to quickly teach myself FreeCAD. Rotor is designed so I can easily change the finger blades to find what works best.

Ok - after being put through the wringer on Physics Forums, and drawing a blank on Physics Stack exchange, I found a calculator on this website for the repulsion force between magnets:

However, an email from them states the calculations are proprietary and the result of thousands of man-hours of experimentation. There is no easy way to express the forces involved. Finite element modelling might be the only answer.

What I can conclude, is that any load on the output will result in an increase in the product of F.t (force x time), the impulse, on the rotor. So with a constant force on the input, it will have to be applied longer, or with a constant time (rotor speed), the force will be higher overall.

My final thought, being honest rather than rude, is that without a timing belt (essentially a drive belt, negating the whole point), the machine probably won’t work as a transmission, and definitely won’t be an over-unity drive.

Good machining practice, though - especially that swash cylinder.

Thanks for your continued diligence, @Guineafowl. I've got it modelled now, so hopefully it's ready to print, assemble and test. Anyway, screw the physics and especially the physicists, I'll just build it and test it and see what it does.

Little update. Been very quiet because I have been designing and continuing to learn FreeCAD in the process. Anyway, here's a photo of the state of the design so far. (It's changed dramatically because I decided that the attractive force when the magnets are spaced apart will be small whereas the repulsive force when they are close is significant. Ponder the below for a time (if you have time). I will get back to the forum when I'm a bit further ahead (haven't hardly looked at the Net for weeks except to try to solve FreeCAD puzzles).
