I’ve got one of those blocks not had a chance to use it yet. Did you clock in the block?
what are the spur gears for?

A pair of centres and then a clock in the chuck was my thinking.I've wondered for a long time how you would do this, especially if there was no existing hole in the workpiece. I only just recently watched a Keith Fenner video where he had a die head in the toolpost and found the answer. The back end of the die head is either hollow or has a centre drilling in it, so he just reverses it into the tailstock centre, adjusting the cross-slide until it is inline with the lathe axis. Most Morse drills have a centre in the end of them so as long as your toolpost is square to the lathe axis, the method should work.
Another option is to make a tow bar for the tailstock and pull it along with the saddle.
I still dont know how..lolI've wondered for a long time how you would do this, especially if there was no existing hole in the workpiece.
