Cross slide drilling

Love it! Had to drill out about 30 spur gears from 15mm to 35mm, took me 3 hours watching the cross slide do all the work instead of the usual endless cranking on the tailstock wheel!

I’ve got one of those blocks not had a chance to use it yet. Did you clock in the block?

what are the spur gears for?

No didn't clock it, lined up the block with a large countersink bit on an existing hole in a spur gear, the holes don't need to be precise, they still need to be bored out to final spec.

Spur gears are for slow moving hydraulic motors in machinery.

I've wondered for a long time how you would do this, especially if there was no existing hole in the workpiece. I only just recently watched a Keith Fenner video where he had a die head in the toolpost and found the answer. The back end of the die head is either hollow or has a centre drilling in it, so he just reverses it into the tailstock centre, adjusting the cross-slide until it is inline with the lathe axis. Most Morse drills have a centre in the end of them so as long as your toolpost is square to the lathe axis, the method should work.

Another option is to make a tow bar for the tailstock and pull it along with the saddle.

I'd put the drill in the chuck, loosen the tool post and holder, bring the holder up to the taper then tighten the post and holder. A bit easier with a tee slot.

On my previous lathe i did all my drilling like this.

a Co-axial* dial indicator in the chuck, soon gets the QCTP Drill holder on axis.
