Creosote

Building an extension off of my workshop and ship lapping pressure treated pine on the outside. Would like to protect the exterior and have that black industrial look so was intending to use Creosote. Where can you get the genuine article these days?

I did our back fences with the proper stuff the other week. You can smell it driving up the road to the house!

I bought it from a farm supply place but its readily available from most industrial suppliers.

I buy it at my local building supplies place, you can get it at an agri supplies as well. I think my last was 55 quid for 30 litres which I reckon is a bit expensive but better than similarly priced creocote which washes off.

Technically you shouldn't be using it for diy / home use.

Nowhere, unless you know of somebody who has stashed a 45 gallon drum away for a rainy day. The new stuff is rubbish compared to the tar like stuff we used to get.

Travelling over to the west coast from Perth so will keep an eye out for a farm shop, must be one about.

Buy some PVC gloves and goggles too! Not sure what is in it but it stings if it splashes on your skin - ruins your clothes, just with the fumes.
Wouldn't fancy any in the eyes!

benzene and coal tar and a few more nastiesthats all I will use on all my fences with added paraffin and waste engine oil . it protects for years .none of the water based rubbish just look at railway sleepers and lamp posts about 80 years old and still strong

Bit off topic, but I remember when I was a new apprentice many moons ago I was given the job of creosoting a lot of timbers prior to fitting later. Unaware of the consequences I was very liberal with the brush application, covering my arms and face with splashes. It was in hot sunny weather, boy did I suffer with burns. That was the real creosote, always careful after that episode.

a few cup fulls of oil and half a gallon of paraffin in 5gals of creosote . it goes further cheaper and soaks in

been adding the oil , never tried the parafin ...when the sun gets on the shed it sweats and goes all wet looking lol its got so much oil on it

if u ever spill paraffin on outdoor wood it stains soaks in and water just runs off it for years

I got it in my eye when I was a kid helping my dad paint the fence, can't remember how old I was, probably less than 10.... my dad washed it out of my eye with water and washing up liquid :-o

When I was about 12 or 13 ..my scout troupe built our own scout hut building , timber frame and ship lap on the out side some kind of insulation and plaster board on the inside ...anyhow we had tons of ship lap to creosote and me and my mates spent many weekends one summer getting it slapped on with big brushes ....no gloves, no masks , shorts and t shirt ,,,great days ....

We used to get brushes specially for creosote, the had a round head with stiff bristles and a six inch handle. In the head was a hole that would accept a broom handle. Great for high work and keeping you away from the creosote
