its worse in summer when its hot
Much to the disgust of my landscape lads I took on a contract to re stake/fit new guards on thousands of trees, virtually all of the treated stakes were rotten. I dont suppose for a minute the ones we fitted were any better Just as well the client supplied the new ones. Where is this timber treatment game going, there does not seem to be a product on the market that will save a softwood post from rotting in the ground.

the brushes with the hole in for a broom handle are called "tar brushes".

Also: re. the boiling tar into timber with a blowtorch.
APPARENTLY (ie, I saw it online) if you char the outside of the wood, it makes it much more resistant to rot?
