Gliding, full bore rifle shooting as an ATC Cadet, motorcycling, then working in mining and the oil industry - a few of the training sessions stay with you! I've still got all my digits and limbs in the same place and working as well as can be expected.
And therein lies the crux of the matter.
Like many older folk I was taught common sense by my Dad and my big brother, both who worked in heavy engineering environments, and when I started work I was fortunate to be mentored by more "old hands" who passed their knowledge and good habits on to me.
Fast forward to the present day and there are very few folk left who can pass on that knowledge. One of my favourite sayings is "It's not rocket science" and to me a lot of things aren't, but that's because I was taught common sense. If you haven't been taught how to accomplish a task safely, it's odds on that you won't.
