Cost of galvanising

It’s all a learning curve and a good finish is down to prep. Pics two and five look like acid leaching out of incomplete lap welds, pic four looks like blown mill scale. The odd snurgs of galvo can be fettled with a fine flap disc. As said you can’t really send in hinges and expect much in the way of a finish.

Think i am just being a bit of a grumpy git. but wish folk would tell me truth when i ask, hinges were obvious aswell. and i spent good time cleaning them up. maybe a full weld all around will be better thenaswell . The snurgs, is that the over glav/runs ? is bad, i mean it looks like they have been dipped in a thick paint of dripped dried. bad build up in edges.

I sent a job for dipping with small tubes (a post feet on a defender bulkhead)

I wanted to use the feet for a bracing bar, and put a bolt through the tube with washers on each end and did it up tight. My fear was that the zinc would get in and I'd have to drill out the bolt, but it ended up that I was able to grind off the nut and, hammer though the bolt and the washers just "chipped" off with a hammer blow.

They'd have probably wanted to charge me to drill 8mm holes or something if they had noticed, but it worked fine.

(Indeed, went through dipping twice as they did a poor job the first time on the rest of it, but that's another story...)

Anyway, for large "gate" type hinges a washer like this may work. Or, as above make them slightly oversize. Or just leave them as is and drill out the zinc from the female sizes. Zinc is soft to drill.

Ps some plants are better than others. I have a plant 20mins away but I know a local manufacturer who drives their product half way across the country to another plant as that is cheaper than fixing the issues caused by the local plant...

Has anybody got a rough idea what the latest price for hot dipped galv? I am trying to quote for a small fabrication job, about 100 Kg in 3 peices.
There was a reference to £1.30 per Kg earlier in this post.

On £800+vat/t atm, that’s going to Sawtry. Not sure if they charge extra for one offs, I usually take in 400-2500kg at a time. Remember to allow for prep before and post galv. For costing I would work on plus 20% of the galvanising rate.
