Only drill blind holes,so no mess.
My conclusion is a direct drive like Mikita make,a threaded nose 1/2” bsp,fits 75% of my bits (rest are m22!),much more robust than the 10 mm shank of sds,not sure if they’re hammer though?
Problem is most of the holes I’m boring have voids and and interrupted stone joints,that cause jolts transmitting thru the shank,which must take its toll,some holes are 200 deep,and take an hour each!
The carbide tips dissipate heat reasonably,I’ve experimented with regular quenching,don’t notice a difference.

Diamond core and no hammer, I have a very old large sds that is supposed to do hammer and drill or chisel with no rotation, by fluke and I don't know if this is down to early sds chucks ( I think rhere are a different ones now) I can slot in the sds core drill drive into it without it going fully in, this stops the hammer action from engaging and it spins without hammer.
The drill has done countless cores mainly 4" and 5" with the odd 6 thrown at it now and again, it's been doing this for probably 14yrs.
Only issue I once got crap in the chuck driving core through engineering bricks down a manhole, couldn't get the chuck to release, it eventually relinquished the damn thing after a few attempts over a week of spraying, hammering and cursing, been fine since, has no right to be.

I use a Norton 4inch diamond core with a 1000 watt metabo drill you pay for what u get not cheap but one of the best
I would usually agree with that but my unknown brand drill cost 35quid, that was a long time ago though, I also bought a router for £7.50 at the same time, that's still going too lol.
But yes you are right generally you get what you pay for
Never had problems with alignments mike,just the sheared shanks.
Is that with sds drive?
