You still need to fill with chain oil which is where the real mess happens! Some saws can be quite leaky when not in use.

What size are you after? Echo CS2511WES is prettty quiet as far as petrol saws go. I rarely bother with ear defenders, whilst I do for most other petrol tools. When another climber works nearby as I need to put defenders on for theres (Stihl MS151), and not mine, even when they are 5-10 meters away.

If its small stuff, upto 6-8", then one of the 18v brushless pruning saws off amazon will do a decent job and standard battery last all day.

Bigger stuff upto 10-12", then an 18v saw will be fine but you'll only get about 7-10x 10" cuts on a 4Ah battery, so not a great amount!
Bigger wood could really use 36v or 56v batteries.

I have a Katsu/Fakita 18v brushless saw. With battery it weighs more than the 2511 petrol saw. They cant get close to petrol for weight.

Toolstaton do their Hawksmore brand brushless tools, I have heard the saws are ok, come with batteries for £120 or 200.


I wouldnt bother with a mains one, the cord would irritate me.

I've got a Hikoki 36V one, because that's the battery platform I use - its decent, not the best cordless saw, but very handy for odd cuts. Sharp chain is essential.

However I wouldn't use it for cutting up logs, you would eat batteries. Cheap electric titan is my go to for that.
Cord is a non-issue as you aren't moving around felling if you are just processing logs on a cutting rack.
They are cheap as chips and you can work all day, put it away for 8 months and know it will work instantly when you pick it up again.

Does the makita use two batteries at a time?

Yes, two LXT, they really need 5 or 6Ah batteries to run properly.

I’ve moved to the 40v XGT batteries now, I’ve got the top handle in that and it’s a little beast, every bit as powerful as the petrol equivalent and much easier up a tree! The rear handle 40V is more powerful again which is what I will replace this one with if it ever dies. I think it’s 7 years old at this point and does more than most DIY saws would.

A good couple of years ago I purchased a corded chainsaw, a Oregon CS1500 with an 18" chain.

I have been felling my land for some time and use a petrol version but I wanted one that was corded and could deal with trunks and large limbs pulled closer to the property once felled.

The 1500 with the 18" bar, I can't knock it, it has been very useful and I'm so glad I opted for the 18".

I forgot all the stuff and nonsense about self sharpening, it requires a certain type of expensive chain for that and was never ever that good a method, I use standard chains and learnt to sharpen them, (which admittedly is still an ongoing learning process).

After the recent storm I had 3 trees lean and needed felling quick. Monday I had a couple of my older grandchildren down with their mates and let them lose with the corded chainsaw and a recip" ( supervised ), they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, worked their socks off, did a fantastic job breaking up the smaller branches and bundling them then logging the larger limbs and stacking.
After a hard day they raided the fridge, I had forgotten just how much hungry 15 year olds can eat.

The 1500 behaved flawlessly, they just had to remember to keep an an eye on the oil.

The convenience of a corded chainsaw around a property is it's plug and go, no fussing.

18v dewalt perfect for using in the garden and not stressing out the neighbours, not a patch on any 2 strokes

Mains powered would surely be better for work at home?

Why fumes in the car, you'd be cutting outside I know the problem, I have to be very careful not to bring fumes into house, shed or garden. All my saws kept in the shed are drained before they are put away and that works adequately.


Another option, but perhaps with a shorter bar or better guarding! Though I would keep it at ground level. Why lift the logs if you dont need to.

What a load of faff... £100 buys you a simple version of this, clamp your corded saw into it and away you go.
As a what's possible at home though I think it's a good demo.

Makita 36v is usually 2 18v batteries, in the past I had an SDS and a lawn mower

I have the Husqvarna 120i.
The battery is 36v 5.2 ah.
I'm very happy with it, and really quite impressed with
what it can do. Personally, I find the battery autonomy
also quite impressive. At a rough guess, if one were to
saw continuously, without a break, I reckon it has about
2.5 hrs clear autonomy. That amounts to quite a lot of
cut timber.
As others have said, though, keeping the chain really sharp
is key.

Have a ryobi cordless chainsaw for just jobbing about quick because I have loads of their batteries for other stuff, it does alright.
On my log sawbench I have a corded 220v electric chainsaw which is equally as great if you can get near enough to a extension outlet. I just leave it on the sawbench full time ready to go, and cut trees into large lumps capable of being dragged up to the yard and go on the bench.
I have a petrol saw & last time I used it, it wasnt running well so it was just slung into a corner until it was needed. That has turned out to be several years later already, so probably all the fuel pipes and carb would need going through, but, I'm all for battery stuff now because I just do my own stuff and after 4 batteries, I'm done for the day, let alone the saw.
