2 years ago we made 2 curraghs at our mens shed, basically a boat shaped latticed larch strip frame covered with a layer of thick cotton canvas, a thin coat of bitumen, a layer of ballistic nylon then a thick coat of bitumen. We got the lend of a tar boiler & just used the stuff they use for fixing roads.Heavy weight callico fabric proofed with several coats of bitumen emulsion
Fantastic! Did you use them? and what were they like for stabillity? Love to see some pictures if you have any...........Cheers2 years ago we made 2 curraghs at our mens shed, basically a boat shaped latticed larch strip frame covered with a layer of thick cotton canvas, a thin coat of bitumen, a layer of ballistic nylon then a thick coat of bitumen. It went on quite well, poured it from a steel watering can then levelled it quickly with scrapers & brushes but it was a tad messy! We only discovered the downside of using road tar when we had the boats on display at a show. It was a hot day & the tar started to sag where it was thick!
Give it a go mate 24 ribs for the framework about 3/4" diameter 60 weavers. All ours were cut from a local willow bed. we just laid a rope on the ground and eyeballed the shape from there. Find a plank for the seat and set to i got the callico for the skin from empress mills ont tinternet and a tin of bitumen emulsion from wickes its a day long absorbing project oot in the fresh air.I always fancied making one of those.
Nearest we ever got was sailing "quarrycles" - hgv wheels that someone had dumped, just big enough for a 12y/o to sit in and paddle round.

Now that is interesting. Would love to see that when its doneFunnily enough, I'm working on something similar (as soon as my back stops hurting[1] ):
A curved shed roof. Trampoline frames linked by unistrut, then draped in cement dipped hessian.
Hmmm. A *concrete* coracle...

[1] decided to have a BBQ after unloading 1000 bricks from the van.
Struck a match, leaned forward to light the BBQ, and my back spasmed. Been laid up nearly a week with it.
Just after 7pm? it is just before 9pm.

Lattice frame of larch steam bent into shape & tenoned into the softwood gunwhales. The cross points were glued & nailed.

First canvas cover fitted, I think it was glued to the wood with cascamite then the inside was painted with a water based polyurethane varnish to seal it & stop the tar bleeding through.

Second cover of ballistic nylon fitted & tarred.

This was launch day, which went very well. They floated very well & were relatively stable. Most of the shed members & many others had a go at rowing them. But due to having no keel they were difficult to keep straight & coupled to inexperienced & mismatched pairs of oarsmen there was a lot of laughter. That was until the photographer went out on his own. His family were all eel fishermen & boy could he handle a boat! In his hands it flew up the water!

Our tutor Sean carved this figurehead for the boat.
A few months later the boats were on display at an event attended by Prince Charles & Camilla. He was very interested in the boats, particularly the figurehead. One of our shed members, who is a real joker was very nearly asking him if it reminded him of the wife! There is definitely a resemblance!View attachment 296890
My father had a double canoe, which was used to cross the channel, of the same constructionOften meant to put a thread in the projects section about them. Here's a few pics.
