Well that was an embarrassingly easy fix
Studying the diagram of this and the newer chippie, which aren't particularly good, after trying to work out where I need to put the shim I got some big stilsons on the handle and tightened the nyloc "saddle screw securing nut" a bit by bit and et voila, no movement and virtually no backlash and the cross feed handle turns silky smooth.
I feel stupid but happy, maybe I should become a politician.
