I think that is the guy I watched a vid where he made a special inserted tool. If so the guy is seriously good with that Mazak.

Did you see what he moved from to the family farm...it was insanely small.
I've seen earlier vids from NY CNC, and their later stuff in that purpose built facility, but haven't watched any history video describing it exactly. Quite unbelievable how he started out, from what I understand was a tiny spare room in a Manhattan apartment.

Apologies @Hood this inches Malaki is unfortunately part of the job as it's scaled down from full size.
3/16" to the Inch to be precise, albeit some of the valve gear has had to "beefed" up a bit. This is quite a large scale miniature locomotive with will run on 10 ¼” gauge.
The design is Edwardian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNWR_Claughton_Class) and so a lot of the components date from the Victorian era as the builders London and North Western Railway worked on using a lot of existing components. This makes some of the bits incredibly ornate!!Thankfully @erasma has offered to have a go, but your analysis is correct it’s the tricky globe in the centre that makes it bloody complicated. @pressbrake suggestion of cylindrically grinding the bearing surfaces after hardening may well be on the cards as I know a man with a J&S 310

Maybe the radius could be machined on a lathe with a ball turning attachment once the rest was done, would certainly be a lot quicker than any method on the mill I would imagine. CNC lathe would obviously make things easier for both the initial turning and the secondary.
It has been a good experiment for me to draw it up as it has helped a lot with the learning process of Fusion, I still don't have it 100% but it is close.

Well that was fairly simple to do in Fusion although I took two attempts at getting the centre correct and having to type bloody inch dimensions goes against the grain
First off the turned part which would be the first op for me.

Then a case of lopping off the material from the bottom and boring the hole and machining the pockets.

Flip over and do the second side. If the ball shape needs to be there then I reckon that will be 3D milling and time consuming.

Id consider that ball with a ground profile cutter do it on the lathe, was the only challenge that i saw

That went a long time ago.You need more imagination then .
Christ 5 pages for turning up a bit of steel each end and cnc mill two sides, it's a super easy job. The centre hole is probably H7 so all it need is reaming. If you don't want to go down the case hardening route and refinishing you could go with a steel that can be nitrided and you will get very little distortion. Nitriding runs better on bearings anyway.

Jokes aside. Having moved on from Tool and die making about 12 years ago and having moved more into a bespoke manufacturer of obscure parts has been interesting. ( I moved continents and apart from one Pillock who thinks he is a tool and die maker, there were no opportunity’s in that field locally)
No detracting from tool and die making skills, but one thing you soon learn with custom parts is workholding. Something you very rarely worry about with a plastic injection mould, as normally it’s a ground rectangular plate you are machining. Easy to hold.
Bespoke, cylindrical parts with bearing surfaces either end require a bit of thought to clamp them for milling that hold them tight enough without marring these surfaces. This is where the time comes in. You are surely deluded if you think you will bang that part out, to those tolerances, in a couple of hours. Been there, tried that, never got the t shirt
Probably more deluded if you think that injection moulding tools are about nice square blocks that are easy to hold.
There is injection tool making and there is injection mould tool making. When you have 70+ inserts in one tool no square faces to hold against each other come back and tell hold easy all those were to hold.
Try doing electronics with tooth pick inserts with details on them.
Large 90 pipe injection mould tool that runs on tracks with hydraulics and tooling costs 250K+
It is a constant problem these days with the complexity of injection mould work holding. Sure some stuff is easy it's when it gets hard people don't cut it the mustard.

I have stayed away from this thread and often do for other similar threads for the reasons above... it always ends the same in more recent years as more machinist orientated people have populated the forum. Us guys are rare these days, we should work to be on the same page not different ones. Co-operation is far more productive for everyone than divisions. Toolmaking, mould making, jigs and fixtures, special purpose machines, manual and and CNC machinist they are all very high skill sets.... why do we have to have this points scoring all the time in these threads?
It's worth looking at someone with a multitasking lathe. It would make the parts 'one hit machining' bar hardening and grinding pending how you want to go about it, with only one set up more or less. Accuracy is maintained due to no multiple set ups. With the right software this would not be a particularly hard part to program. Still doable to mill on a 3 axis or manually if you can be arsed to put in the work. I think multi tasking is the way to go due to ease of set up and i think would be cheaper. The 'machining' (machining alone) could be a few hours work on the right machine and right facilities that not everyone has... that would be multi tasking machines. This is the key thing recognising what equipment people have available this is the make or break. The whole job is from when you first look at a drawing to the point you are paid on completion.

Middle of the two bosses ,the shaft is turned down to 20mm. No problems so far? Nope. Just one small problem. There is a 20mm ball bearing that runs in the middle of that shaft. Have asked for guidance on how to assemble it.....
