Cleaning a DPF with heat?

Reckon it's worth a shot to whip the DPF off my x type and blast it with the blow torch for a while, try and burn some of the crap out?

I've got the dreaded dpf full red light, flashing coil light, maf/differential pressure monitoring suggests the dpf is clogged with readings of 32+kPa differential pressure when maf is reading around 90-100g/s, realistically that pressure should be half what it's reading for a healthy dpf...

I've resigned myself to 200 quid for an aftermarket dpf but as ill be breaking the nuts/bolts loose before actually attempting it i wonder if it's worth trying to 'cook' the soot out of the current one?

Annoyingly the reason for the regens failing once again appears to be the egr is stuck, so thats got to come off for a clean as well, which bugs me as it's only 8 months old itself. I caught it early last time and got the egr swapped before the dpf was anywhere near full, not so lucky this time.

This all ties into me wanting a van as the jag has been dying a death for a while now, was hoping to stretch it out a few more months though and get through the summer before changing it

If it's blocked with soot you might get away with some improvement, but if it's blocked with ash, I think you're on a hiding to nothing.

Pressurised water or compressed air to blow the ash back out of the inlet seem to be the commercial solutions, but I have no experience DIYing. Any DPF cleaning services locally?

Tried 3 diagnostics and none of them will allow a forced regen, they all say not supported on this model.

I can do compressed air at 10 bar, will give that a go.

Local cowboy wants 500+ any labour involved to access things and offers no gurantee of any sort that it will even work

If your taking it off I've had good results from Wynns off car DPF cleaner.

Block off all the holes, fill the DPF up and leave overnight to do its stuff, then flush the gunk out. It's amazing the muck that comes out.

The other option's having it cleaned by a specialist. You take it off, hand it over, they put it on some magical machine & out it pops cleaner than most whistles.
Localish to me are 2 firms with the machines, one wanted £80, the other about £200 which. I'd have gone with the first price of of had the means too get it to them & collect.

Really? I thought it was more likely to be driving style than anything else, too many short trips that don't allow the engine to get up to temperature or re-gen.

It's a symptom of jags poor design criteria...the dpf on the 2.2d auto apparently rarely gets hot enough for a proper regen cycle due to its position. It will do a regen just fine and think its clear but in reality it's only done a partial regen...

The egr is also incredibly common on them for clogging/sticking shut, again due to jags poor design choices, the same design choices that put an unsuitabke boost pupe in a very difficult to reach location knowingnit will likely split...and it dies, ive dinenit 3 times in 2 years using genuine oarts and then the 4th time i went aftermarket and its lasted the longest so far...apart from Sundays it does 12 miles each way mon-fri, mostly motorway at 70+, it did a 240 mile round trip monday, a 290 mile round trip Tuesday, and a 34 mile round trip yesterday...then with no bother of a yellow light it went straight to red, restricted performance and no ability for a forced regen...

personally I'd be knocking the middle out and getting it re-mapped out

if you can;t get to it to knock it out down the pipe cut a hole knock it out then weld it up again, somewhere were its out of view once it's re-fitted

erg remapped out too, some you have to fit a blanking plate too, some just get turned off


probably £130 ish for the remap

What differential pressure indication do you get with ignition on but engine not running? It should be zero, worth checking that to make sure the sensor is ok and not giving you duff info prior to blaming the dpf

Last quote i had for dpf remap was £280+vat for the dpf and a further 200 for the egr

The X type in question is most likely "high mileage - no C3 oil changes" - dead EGR valve - leaking turbo - tired injectors.

The DPF has been working like a "blackpool donkey" and is tired - end of life - dying...

My transit blocked its dpf . All the silly people were saying force a regen or use miracle juice.
Well it won’t regen if the fuel vaporiser isn’t working and if it was working it wouldn’t be blocked.
I replaced vaporiser, forced regeneration. Job done .

"expensive TFR" - that comment made me smile - but TFR does melt tarmac - and you are dealng with "coal" - but you wanna remove it from a honeycomb ceramic core" (cordierite or silicon carbide core)
