I must add, early RS4's are also very unaffordable now. Now, I HAD TO sell it as I managed 11 points in three months and it was definitely going to go south on me so the simplest route was to remove temptation and the ability, to collect any more.

I sold my Mk1 Mex in '85 for £895, regretted it at the time and even more so now.

I sold my 240Z in '87 for the same, and before that I scrapped the Sunbeam Tiger 260, as mum wanted it off the drive, and there were no takers at £300.

Look, no one said anytyhing about affordable.

And yes, perhaps people do need their lumps read. But compared to other stuff on the market, 10k is cheap. If you want a piece of 70/80's Ford RS, you'll be paying 50k upwards for the right car. Italian exotica? high seven figures.

If you don't want to pay 10k, then don't, it's your choice. But 5-10k for a 30's useable classic is relatively inexpensive.

This guy sells a fair bit of old stuff….his facebook is usually most up to date. Very genuine and easy to deal with. Trailers, diggers, tractors as well as cars etc

I once sold a Mk1 RS1600 (yes, BDA) for £2000. makes my head hurt if I think about it now, my last RS2000 I sold for £1500 and it had ALL the right bits on it.

We could all be millionaires with last weeks lotto numbers…..prices are all about supply and demand, prices seem highest based on the generation accessing the lump sum to buy what they couldn't afford as a yoof

Same goes for the best time to buy a classic car unfortunately, although the answer is maybe 40 years ago...

I recently was ordered to come and remove a hoard of car magazines from my mum and dad's, these are from 35 years ago, Practical Classic and the like. Flicking through the classifieds in some of them would make you cry, the asking prices seem like peanuts, and this around 1990 when classics had a bit of a boom before slumping again.
Even worse is 60's car magazines...
I just need a checkbook and the use of a Delorean for a few days

How much do you think it would have cost you in time and money to keep it in the condition that the top priced ones are now? Was it in the sort of condition that the top price ones are now in? Then chuck in 40 years of storage or being outside deteriorating, see the previous question. Then 40 years worth of inflation. I could go on...

Probably a few hundred more, the final tally inc original motor was well under a grand, and I've been driving round in it ever since, (completed about 2017)

Modern classics for me, my daily driver is usualy over 30 years old.

Currently a diesel e class, very slow but does 40mpg and is very easy to work on.

I haven’t read this full thread, just come across it.
Classic cars, buy sensibly at the right price and you’ll have a classic that you can enjoy with the added benefit that you’re not going to lose any money because they will go up in price as time goes on.
Hopefully you’re good with spanners and sockets in order to try to remove all of those seized stuck fasteners which will need replaced and go with the territory of owning an old car.
I bought my 964 C2 in 2008 and have loved it and it’s increased in value since then by quite a bit, They require a lot of labour to maintain compared to a newer car but a classic is a very special driving experience, and unless you’ve been behind the wheel of one most folk probably won’t understand why you’d want one.

It was indeed in the best condition, but the point is, I wish I still had it so I could still be driing it not so I could sell it!

If you want to be driving it that's one thing. The usual line is about how little it was sold for and how much they are worth now, but ignoring any deterioration and costs that would have been incurred in the intervening time.

My father was a frightful chair polishing bean counter, but a very good one. He worked for a company that made scientific and aircraft instruments and knew a lot about the manufacturing processes involved.

Of all the vehicles I have owned, and there are many, the two I would have now are a Ford Thames 15cwt and a Bond Bug. Just for the memories.

Definitely the Thames for the same reason. Gave mine away 40 years ago to another M/C racer as spares for the one he was still using .

I drive old vehicles mainly because I hate modern cars with a passion. I also think it's cheaper travel per mile because I can do my own service and I only need basic insurance. Granted I don't live in a densely populated area so I am free of a lot of cons that entails.

I would have a classic any day of there week over a modern car. It sounds li6ke you would like one but not got the love for one which you need IMO. Tinkering must be enjoyed. And unless you dont need transprot then a back up car is needed. incase of the long reoair jobs that may be needed.

Only good thing in modern cars is better fuel economy. rest is just useless gadgets Modern cars are more expensive tor run aswell. I recently got rid of my MK3 Shogun 3,2 DiD and now i have got a 1981 C3 Corvette small block 350.

My wife has just got a 16 plate Merc A Class. nice and all the gadgets etc smooth ride but boring to drive.

Now the Vette needs to be driven which makes them fun I am lucky as i can use the SWMBO`s car when i tinker and mine for fun and work, it will be a daily runner. Used for work now and then and weekends away.

My car is the cheapest of my old Shogun ( and it was paid for ) to run if i used it everyday for work. due to insurance being so cheap zero tax. My wifes car aswell if you include the repayments for it a lot cheaper.

So in all classics can be a lot cheaper to run if its to just get around. Then though a classic can be used to commute de4pending on the car.

There is no need for a classic car but a want/love for one to enjoy to tinker and drive.

I always say if your car does not make you smile you have the wrong car.

I can sit and look at this and i smile.

mmy brothers rav 4 isnt a classic, but is compliant or free of lez zones etc so proves a very handy run about when you need to go into town/bristol etc , 51 reg and still going strong although at about 25mpg isnt exactly economical !

I pay just over £100 a year fully comp all mods listed in great detail.

Limited to 3k miles a year and must be garaged after 10pm
