Never thought of that [senior moment ]. I'll give it another go since it's easier than electrolysis or ultrasonic cleaner. A kettle of boiling water will go in with it.

After using citric to remove rust I often wipe over, or spray from a hand trigger bottle, with dilute phosphoric acid as an anti flash treatment. This is followed by a quick dip in fresh water to remove any excess.

sounds like what i was after...diluted how much ? is it something i can buy localy ?

any tricks or treatments to save it from flash rusting before paint ? dont want to oil it but not ready to paint instantly

I use Bilt Hamber Atom Mac in the wash-off water...works a treat!

I seen this on banggood, would it be suitable for heating a tank, it comes with adhesive to stick it on so could be stuck to the bottom of your tank so no worries about any problems with the heater being in the tank. It says it heats to 250-300c so would need some sort of controller to lower the power.

i was thinking for smaller tubs why not get a cheapo kettle and warm up a few litres at a time ?

That would be the only way - this from the seller's description "...Such as with temperature controller, please do not install in a drop of water...."

I just wondered if it would melt/soften a plastic tank? [ignore this if you tank is metal, of course ] It might be more effective if mounted under the tank, since heat rises.....

My recycled hand water heater did have a effect on the plastic bucket.
But oddly not the recycle box from the council.

washing up liquid is ph neutral - thats why it's "kind to your hands"

It is as I have just seen PH neutral.

It works, as I have used it many times before. I used to use Zesty Lemon cheepo stuff. But I did not find it in the £1 shop.

Soap is an alkaline, plenty of salt in there too, be interesting to do a back to back test with and without.

Cornstarch is a good thickening agent but for example wallpaper paste reacts with the organic acid and isn't.

I just use cheap lemon/citrus APC - usually it's already citric acid based

if you want goopy you can use Tomato ketchup or molasses etc. They are all citric...

That is straight from the tank, well bucket of fresh water to rinse the salt from the washing up liquid.

The "Gloop" did need regular attacking with a stiff brush to work the crus, soot and oil off.

A good way to make a thick paste is cheep wall paper paste.

LOL. I guess you haven't actually tried wallpaper paste and citric then?

Ketchup is cheap as chips and works well on light corrosion.
