Churchill SL15A deep socket?

I wondered if anyone knew what it was for?
I am guessing it's a special tool.
It's 1-7/8" AF and 7-1/4" deep. 1/2" drive.
I was given it as a mini swivel socket, which it's
not and it's been in with the sockets 30 years or
so and I can't remember ever using it.

May not be related, but Churchill made engine tools. I've a diesel compression tester by them

they did use a big socket like that in the Mini / A series transmission.......
poto might be good.....

I can't remember anything that big in a mini engine.
Gotta be a nut with ~5" of shaft sticking out of it.


Not all VL Churchill stuff was service tools.
Some of my ex WD sockets are Churchill.
Maybe Winston did some spannering on the side.

Mini Ball joints and non Verto flywheel bolt and I think the transmission nut is 1 1/2” AF . Can’t think offhand of any Mini parts that were 1 7/8” .

I have a mini ball joint socket and it's just a half inch drive deep socket with none of that long extension. You'd never get that on a clutch nut with the engine still in the car.

wheel hub nut?

not neccessarily for a mini! quick google suggest 1 1/8 for front hubs. no info for rear.

I would hazard a guess it's for a gearbox shaft retaining nut. Quite a typical design for that application and they're generally quite large nuts.

I was wondering about sprocket nuts. I had a few butchered sockets, mostly with bits of fork tube welded into them.
Shovelheads have 1-7/8" sprocket nut.

Then I remembered using a butchered socket to do up jag irs outputs shaft nuts.
I had a look in a jag manual and special tool SL 15 A is shown.

I never used SL15A on sprocket nuts as it's been in one of the junk socket boxes
and they only get looked in when a socket is needed to make something.

Hi do you still have this socket ? 1 - 7/8 AF is used on Classic Mini Automatic it is long because the nut is buried deep inside the case, this is the socket for undoing the 3rd gear hub nut, I would be willing to beg borrow or buy, if you want to sell that is

1-1/8" is for drum brake front hub nut, disc brake minis use a 1-5/16"

Mini Ball joints are 1.5" same as flywheel bolt on pre verto, the verto flywheel bolt is 30mm

No it hasn't got a shaft sticking out, it is for the 3rd gear clutch hub nut which is just deep inside the transmission case, if you remember the mini mainshaft nut on a manual its in the same sort of place but for an automatic

Isn't the Jaguar tool 1-3/4" though ?

I did a BMC course on transverse automatics 50 odd years ago as we had had several go through the workshop previously and I have a very vague recollection of a similar socket but i haven’t touched a transverse auto since

It's 1-7/8" according to Mitutoyo.

My mini automatic course was Gary, the old bloke in the factors, telling me if I changed the oil the box would slip.
So knowing Gary was full of **** I changed the oil, seems Gary wasn't full of ****.
On cheap cars the only way to go was convert to manual.
