Now he is just about to turn 18 so cheap insurance is the main thing, anything else can be sorted by me.

Also on private land as mentioned in a previous post there will be no insurance, this is why I won't let him use his current daily

Is it just me or is this one seriously confused post ?

First message was about RWD car, some fun and cheap insurance. Plenty of conjecture about the rights and wrongs of doing it his on the public highway and now the introduction of a farm

Well if your planning to do this on the road, don't for all the reasons that have been highlighted, on the other hand if your doing this on a farm then buy the cheapest car you can with the biggest engine and have the most fun you can

If your first post was clearer and set the scene better I'm sure you would have some more appropriate responses

When I was younger and living in Edinburgh two of us went to an auction and went halfs on a little turbo Mitsubishi that was an mot failure, I think it was a Colt or starrion, not too sure. We trailered it to my mates farm in Haddington and ragged it to death over the course of a weekend, was great fun

Think it was an 1800 marina that a work mate took me out in. Scared the pants off me, age 16, seemed mighty fast to me. I had a marina van, it was a laugh and a half. Could get the back end out easy

So in that case. buy a wreck and just play with it entirerly on the land - then he can buy a knackered 3L BMW 3 series and not have to MOT or insure it.

HaHa this reminds me of years ago when i just passed my test at 17 years old (ime 55 now) and my old man said to me "instead of diking about in cars can you not buy something sensible for the firm" as i worked for him at the time...so i spent a month buried in a damp workshop and come out with the MK1 bullnose ford transit short wheelbase pick-up with a 3 litre capri engine fitted into it..now that thing when empty could drift and kept my old man happy at the same time

my younger brother is currently driving a Suzuki ignis awd but he wants something fun.

He has never been into cars at all but he has asked me if I can find him a rwd as he wants to learn how to control and slide a car about.

Now he is just about to turn 18 so cheap insurance is the main thing, anything else can be sorted by me.

I'm thinking he doesn't need much power as long as the car is light.

Any suggestions?

No seriously, it's the compact/hatchback version of the e36 series IIRC, just be aware it doesn't handle as good as the other styles of e36 because it's rear suspension was a more basic design.

There are plenty of e36 318's for sale under 500quid that are fine for hooning around your private land, you don't need a bigger engine unless you have many tens of acre's to play in.

Get a cheap fwd car, weld the diff solid, fit a set of knobbly tyres to the front and slicks on the back. Take it into a field and when you enter a corner lift off the throttle and try to control the drift. Used to do this in my stock car after our fields were harvested, hours of fun were had.

I hate it, the steering is heavy, the engine is under powered (1.5 vvt) and the awd is crap...it's front wheel drive with a very low amount of power going to the rear very rarely...add to that its small, tiny boot space, uncomfortable seats and a poor driving position in my opinion...

It was my mothers car and now only my brothers as its cheap for him to insure, it's just come down after 3 months of careful driving and a black box to 1078 a year

I had a lot of the death trap cars mentioned above, Marina's, Carlton estate, Capri, Sierra all good fun but try an old Vauxhall Frontara in the snow or rain......
