cheap heating of steel

Hi all
I dont currently have oxy acet or oxy prop or any bottles because I dont do enough hot bending of steel to justify it.
I need to bend some 12mm round bars so whats the cheapest gas burner with the heat output to make some round bar red hot?

Bought or made? Bought, weed burner/roofing torch. Made, look up Ron Reil burner. Extra forced air to a propane burner always has good results (look at the people doing white lines on the road). For 12mm bar, a firebrick or insulated surround to concentrate the heat will help a lot. Look up 'table top mini propane forge' and make one with a 1/2" hole in the back.

A decent vice bolted down properly of course and a bit of scaffold pole, 12mm should bend fairly easily.

I was watching a video link about rocket stoves a few days ago....it got me thinking that with a few tweaks (line the inside) plus some forced air I wondered whether it could produce quite a bit of heat!

I shoved a bit of 12mm bar into mine after I built it, out of curiosity, heated the end of it to a hot red, not white hot but it would have been hot enough to bend.

I was thinking of building one..would be a forge...and a BBQ of course.

Obviously when I get signoff from SWMBO it would just be a BBQ!

When I looked at how fierce the flame was I was thinking it could be tweaked...and use coal for the fuel.

Before I retired I would repair exhaust brackets with 12 mm mild steel which I bent cold using a decent vice and a length of steel pipe ( compressed air pipe) dead easy and far quicker than heating. Failing that a cheap bracket bender

What centre line radius do you want the 12mm bar bent to?

I often cold bend 12mm m/s round bar in a ridged instrument bender with a tube extension on the handle. This gives me a CLR of 38mm and an overall diameter of (r38+r38 +12mm) of 88mm.

already wondered that myself i think its possible, but its constant heat you need so a largish double firebox is needed one inside the other

get that heat over a long period and your laughing as all you would need is a spreader to spread 4" over a distance lets just say 4" into 1" that would give you a bar of 16" of heating area

now rocket stoves work differently its better to put the flue lower than the area your heating



peter van berg stove wont hit the high temps due to not preheating the air

gary b stove has recorded temps well over 1800f degrees at top of the riser as i have the video

Brake drum charcoal forges work well at heating steel. A couple of blacksmith hobbists I know are very successfull using theirs.

Way too hot for a BBQ, would make a good heat source for using a pan on.

depends on how tight a bend you need? We regularly put radiused 90° bends on 12mm just using the vice and a long ring spanner to bend it cold. 12mm isn't too bad, needs a wee bit of force that's all. With a decent vice and a longish lever... easy.

I thought Peter preheated the air through the primary burn chamber before mixing it with gases in the insulated riser for the secondary burn.

Depends how you set up the grill Parm...agree you wouldn't stick a burger in the main flame so I'd need to redistribute the heat...time for Google searching for ideas

One guy makes his out of logs....the logs provide the fuel....excellent idea for outdoor camping.

Basically an "L" shaped hole in a mound of soil.
steel, and air goes in the horizontal hole.
Wood goes in, and smoke comes out, of vertical hole.

Basically a "rocket stove", but with forced air (from a vac, hairdryer, or bouncy castle blower).

Would also work with charcoal, or coal, but 12mm doesn't take a lot of heating.

i quoted preheating the air meaning the prinary air input, not secondary air peter van berg heats his secondary air

his primary air is at bottom lip of the glass you can see it better via this video of his

Ed Stafford style: part burn some wood, buried in sand, on a beach, call it charcoal, then decide it burns at 1200c, start a fire with it, plunge your steel in, blow the fire a bit, then forge a spear point using the back of a machete. Easy peasy.
