It's not hard to strip windows 10 back if you want to use it.So would i be better off going with the now defunct windows 7 and keeping it off line?

Plenty of scripts to do the hard work for you and remove all the junk.
Think I used this one last time around

i still run 7 on most of my toughbooks , mostly cos I like it , touch screen drivers work better than 10 , but Im sure by now thats well sorted out , when i swapped to a ssd it was a problem , but a 31 with a ssd and as much memory as you can throw in is still grand . granted I dont use it as a flight sim or play shoot em up games .
Does the mk1 have wireless?
You should be able to run 64 bit operating systems on that, it just needs an operating system installed as the hard drive will most probably have been wiped. I wouldn't worry about finding a cover for the power socket either if it were mine. Do you have a copy of Windows 10 in some form if that's what your going with or what version is the Windows license sticker for on the back?
You should be able to use the license key on the sticker on the back to install 10

My CF-D1 runs windows 10 fine - and it looks identical to yours, so I'm guessing it's a MK1.
Did you say it should have win10 installed already?
Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, but have a look at your boot options, and make sure it is actually trying to boot from the internal SSD.
