Cheap ebay toughbook

So I took a risk the other day and bought a cheap CF-D1 Mrk 1 panasonic toughbook tablet off of flea bay as a project. It comes without an operating system installed but apparently a copy of windows ten is included, going to upgrade the ram and install a solid state hard drive too give it some more omph, also it comes without blue tooth so will try and install a blue tooth module.

It comes without a charger and pen. The pen is easy enough to source off of ebay but Im having trouble finding a CF D1 specific charger. Dose anyone know if the CF 19 charger or one of the other panasonic tough book chargers will work with this laptop.

We had paramedics at our house a few months ago, while one of them was tending to a housemate who had collapsed, the other was getting frustrated with the fifteen year old "Panasuckit ****book" he was supposed to be using, ended up throwing it at the floor and jumping on it! I do wonder if there was an element of "Putting on a show" to calm everyone's nerves (He was very friendly and funny) but he really didn't seem keen on the device. Still, he left with it working as well as when he arrived so tough they certainly are.

i had a cf 10? very impressed with the hardware.. less so with the software

Remove the junk software and install linux MINT, 3 versions availible very light/light /regular load; works very fast and no ****ty updates that make it go slower
Installed the light version on my 8 yeard old YOGA, perfect !

Want to use it with car diagnostic software most of which only runs with windows so im stuck with that im afraid.

What im going to try avoiding by upgrading the hard drive and ram. But they literally are bullet proof. One hit a cf 19 it didnt even make it through the screen.

A suggestion from he who knows very little about 'puters, is it possible to partition the hard drive and have a dual boot function set, with Windoze in one partion and whatever you're comfortable with using on another?

You could select which you wanted?

I have about four toughbooks , using a cf31 as I type , great machines , but I just use any power supply that happens to fit ,, this ones on an IBM mains adaptor at the moment.

Unless it a fully manufacturer supported with updates setup you are going for then you could be asking for trouble going for a modern OS looking for updates on a regular basis. A basic install with nothing else but the diagnostics software and no network connection is the way to go for those. Otherwise high chance things will break just when you need them. Windows 7 probably does the job on my Toughbook CF 27 which is only used for diagnostics. Saves you faffing around finding drivers for some of the more obscure hardware inside them. @tom2207 I'm also in the Toughbook running a variety of power supplies camp, think I've killed around 4 on one machine and rather annoyingly can't find the 12v car one I know I have somewhere.

Good bits of kit, installed a few of the laptops on subs - the matelots can climb on the keyboards with their boots on and not break 'em, and they took the shake'n'bake tests pretty well when other laptops died before we got to 5g and 100 degrees...

Of course, you can have windows and linux running on dual boot.
Pretty easy to do whith the correct tools, Linux intalls even ask if you want a dual boot or wipe out the planet of windows.

Or you can run only Linux and have WINE for running windows software within Linux.

I'm all for alternative operating systems but most diagnostics won't work under Linux, they tend to require very specific hardware drivers and are likely to have forms of copy protection/dongles and the like to cause extra grief.

Yeah i was thinking about that, direct access to hardware might be required .........

Oh yes things have changed, LINUX is up to windows for "conviviality" still some little awkward things you have to enter manually for specific drivers and so on, but in the end it's smooth and easy going, especially MINT with the CINNAMON desktop
