Forgot. I’ve ordered a D1-4 backplate from MSC.
Is there any sort of standardisation in the PCD/set out of the holes through the chuck to bolt to a backplate?

How can you tell by looking at a threading insert if it is for internal or external threads?

The backplate from MSC turned up today. And its not plain, not only that but its intended for this chuck 
It still required registering to the chuck, taking approximately 2mm off both faces to get a snug fit on the chuck. It came with the cam lock pins. The chuck came with m10 Cap heads, they looked like cheese, so machined down 3 automotive bolts to suit
Centre punch marks for lining up, covered in yellow paint at the mo. I’ll clean it up once dry.
Less than 0.03mm or 1.2thou run out, not bad. I haven't tried repeatability, not the correct chuck if you are looking for tgat, but worth checking.
Faces of jaws also show very little error. So all in all Im a happy bunny

I don't, I have two lathes. The big one is D1-3 for my Colchester and the two others are myford fitting for my Super7

Weird. I was just about to resurrect this thread. Spurred on by the ‘what grease to use in a chuck thread’
Its been in use for 4mths now. Only gripe; the pinions are still sticky within a small (2turns) around 40mm dia.
Im not happy with the fit of the backplate to the Taper. Once the camlocks are released the chuck will freely slide off the spindle. Not the case with my PB chucks.
So today I stripped it down. Bluing the spindle register, and face. Found a few high spots from past (owners) abuse.
Dressed down gives a much better fit. So close to perfect, I dont want to machine the face of the backplate down, in case I remove too much. I cant say for sure but it must be tenths. Not worth it, to end up with a chuck that rocks on the taper, then the hassle of recutting it.
In the other thread I said I used White Grease. I did, but not in this one. LM2 moly in this one. Its been running at 800-1700 with very little fling.
I’ll have a look at the pinions tomorrow
