It’s a tricky balance, I’m ‘retired’ but happy to take on work I’m comfortable with and as long I cover my costs I’m OK, but I’m not doing it for nothing. I provide a detailed quote on every job, including materials, consumables - welding rods, grinding discs, paint, etc. plus my time - I’m flexible on the hourly rate but have to bear in mind the punishing tax rates here and the amount of time spent going out to price up jobs (I’m travelling up to an hour from here) and design time. Urgent jobs also have a price - if I’ve got to drop something else it has to be paid for, even if that’s a day out with my mates
