I also have a cheap nasty mac thing for such abuse, it was used to get llandi roots out years ago when we lived in the burbs. Worst case is to wreck the bar and chain.

And bigger isnt always best, had an ash tree come down, there are many forestry workers near me, so borrowed geet big monster chain saw 28 inch bar.....by did it rip through the trunk but scared the bejesus out of me. After 5 discs about 3 fit diameter went back to the sthil.

Be aware that there are a lot of fake Stihls and Huskys around.

I looked at the stihl 181, and probably would have went for it if stihl didn't restrict online sales.

I wasn't paying £100 extra because they are trying to protect stupid people.

Yeah I would recommend getting a chain file and guide, takes only a few minutes to get the chain back in shape. Just like a kitchen knife, a dull blade is far more dangerous than a sharp one.

I have a Husqvarna 135, a bit more money than the 236 but also slightly more powerful saw. I rebuilt a 70cc Stihl 044 a few weeks ago as well, been cutting some wood at a local farm. As recommended above, don't operate the saw left handed you will put your face in line with the chain if it kicks back and you cut towards your left leg instead of to the outside of your right leg. You don't need to do anything fancy with the trigger in either hand, the saw is only supposed to be used flat out. Get some safety gear to use with your saw, Northern Arb do some that should see you right.

A friend of mine is left handed and he has tried to use a saw left handed and has admitted right handed is easier. Is this your Bosch electric you are using left handed BS ? With the 9 metre/second chain speed of electric saws you will have lots of time to react and not much pushing back at you but even a small petrol saw is up around 20 metres/second and kicks are not nice.

Most of the fakes are big saws where the money is, not the small home user saws and if you look at saws as much as I do you spot the fakes easily, mostly as the plastics are wrong and the choke operation is cheap and tacky.

I asked about the left handed thing as although it felt "right" with the trigger in my left hand the bloody blade (edit chain) was a bit too close to my leg for my liking...
I've been up the pub tonight with some of the new neighbours and one of them swears you can get left handed chainsaws.....
I'll have to learn to use it cack handed in my right hand then :sheep:

I think the Husquvarna is what I'll go for with your recommendations and it's a lot cheaper plus I've always wanted a Husky two stroke

Been debating a cordless chainsaw for the van for a while.
Just piqued my curiosity again. Don't suppose you've tried dewalts offering as I'm already kitted up with batteries?

I'm ambidextrous, I can do sod all with either hand...

I was born left handed but my dad who is also left handed forced me to be right handed as he had experienced the disadvantages. The only time I struggle is catching things where I'm far more accurate and instinctive left handed. ( I can shoot either handed which is handy as her brothers gun is left handed )

The thoughts of using my saw 'wrong handed' frightens me and I'd always use it the way its intended, as you probably already know you can teach muscles and nerves with patience.

Is there really 2.5k lefthanded people killed each year. If thats the case, I'd argue there's a strong case for manufacturers to offer a lefty version. If it was any other 'minority' they be made to

Other than writing I'm ambidextrous. Know tradesman than can't use a drill in there left hand. A handsaw left-handed requires more concentration on my part but doable.

I write right handed and use a mouse with my right hand, I send CW on a paddle with my left hand. But I naturally grab my tools 'ooh err..' with my right. but try the instinctive catch and see what dominates. Its interesting to try.

Easier said than done when your wedged in a tight space with limited access. Whichever hand is most convenient will be used. That said I'll still choose my right over the left if space is a non issue and orientate my body to suit.
