With the high winds buffeting many parts of the country and the snow beginning to fall, so are many trees. Time for the log burner users to stock up with free wood for next year.

Its chainsaw time again and mine have been filled with fuel and chain oil, has their chains tickled with a file, and are ready to run and gather as many trees as possible which have blown over.

And bear in mind that the vast majority of log burner users don't own a private woodland, then it's a reasonable assumption to make and it's called realism.

You might own your own woodlands (probably part of your sprawling estate, surrounding your hydrogen powered barns filled with millions of pounds worth of classic cars and unique spanners) but quite honestly, at least 99% of the population aren't in such a priveleged position.

For those people, just wandering around with a chainsaw chopping up fallen trees opens them up to prosecution.

Credit were it's due I would be with the guy with the chain saw. (If i had a log burner in the house) I got pallets and old fence panels for summer for the outdoor burner. Like dieselkid said safety first mate

As long as it's done where you have permission and you're not going to land yourself in bother then it's fine. The suggestion that if you see a tree down you rock up wit a saw and have at it is a bit naughty.
For example, I'm aware he forestry commission up this way wont let you use a chainsaw to take dead fall. They may give you permission to take dead fall, but even with a saw safety cert or whatever the course is called they don't let members of the public use a saw due to safety and liability.

Don't forget to take it easy, especially as I remember you mentioned you were recovering from some "serious injuries" a short while back. We don't want you damaging those typing fingers!!

Alternatively you need nice mates who do some tree surgery and supply fire wood.

I get a pick up truck load of fire wood that's been seasoned but branches are too small to sell. It's always exchanged for a feast cooked in the tandoor and some beer

Correct, you can't use a chainsaw to get firewood on FC ground.

Read the post again, it says the saws are ready for action, not who is using them.

Fine if it's your tree on your land, but if on someone else's property or public land it's theft...

In fact, even if it's somebody else's tree that has fallen on your land you still need the owner's permission to harvest the wood for yourself.

So once again you assume people don't already have permission to collect timber, you assume peoples neighbours don't want fallen trees to be cut up and used, and you assume many councils don't want volunteers as they have done for several years to remove fallen trees on the highway.

i am still using the old floor boards, joists and door frames from the house renovation the trees are still seasoning in the greenhouse!

To perform any work for the council I'm assuming you have the required public liability insurance, relevant chainsaw CS certification tickets and a work permit from the local authority?

Apologies but the old CS tickets have been replaced by a "License to Practice" award scheme, showing my age, the old tickets were CS 30, 31, 32, 34, 35 & 50, relevant to the works you would be undertaking on a highway in an emergency situation, I'm quite impressed if you've managed all of those, that's no mean feat!

Well I don't know what it's like now in the UK but in 87 ...anyone who had a truck or van and chainsaw ,got involved in clearing up the tons of fire wood that landed around the village in suffolk that I lived in ... I filled me shed and dropped a few loads to elderly neighbours ... the job was to get the roads open .....great fun ...jeff..Edit worked with chainsaws most of me life never done a certificate.....

I filled me shed and dropped a few loads to elderly neighbours ... the job was to get the roads open .....great fun ...jeff

Sadly times have changed, especially round here, you can't even clean the pavement outside your house without permission, no permission means a "notice to stop" served...
Seems to be rules for us and not for them, they can't even fill the pot holes or voids in the road.

Didn't believe it when I first read it, checked with a good friend that owns a forestry company and he backed me in saying you're a complete and utter cheese dreamer, and you've more chance of crapping in the queens handbag than any council allow you to run around cutting storm fall up with no tickets, no risk assessment, and it seems no grasp on reality

It seems that a fair few with a chainsaw and good intentions got badly hurt and even killed after the 1987 storm cutting up storm fall, and that was the nail in the coffin for that job
