They are but they aren't, its comes down to what fan club you subscribe to.

Totally, my lad has started at college, they have Stihl and Husky saws. We have Stihl at home so he's been using the college's MS261 but he said the when ever the instructor does a demonstration he always picks up one of the Huskys. On Tuesday both Huskys broke down but the Stihl were fine. He was all chuffed with himself today as he'd had a look at one of the Huskys while the others were doing some cutting and found the chain was all bound up on the sprocket which stopped it starting. This meant they had an extra saw and he was able to run a saw for the rest of the day.

He's going to take one of our saws in next week as he spent more time sharpening theirs than sawing, he said to the instructor "My dad said nobody else is allowed to use it though" and the instructor said he totally agreed after watching some of them "digging for worms"

Its the way things have gone James, the new saws are lighter and more powerful. I have hundreds of the sodding things and I can guarantee the guys in the mornings will grab all the newer lighter/powerful saws over the older more reliable/heavy ones. None of the nippers can even start an 880 let alone fell a tree with one.

Kids nowadays are weird! When I was living south I worked for a few arb firms during a ‘can’t be arsed with ships’ period. Mainly looking after plant trucks and kit but a bit of cutting as well

my everyday saw was a 460 with a 13” bar. Did most things but could put a bigger one on if needed. It was a ‘thing’ who was big enough to use the 880. I used to put a small bar like 16” on it. It was unstoppable

I have 3 of the chinesium replica saws which I use for home milling, the whole mill and saw in the picture cost less than £150 and has been used for 4 years now, touch wood (lol) they havent let me down and aprt from regular sharpening havent needed any work on them. Pretty good for cheap imports, wouldnt want to use them for a real job though.

That was as far as I got. Never had the bottle to climb but loved crosscutting and felling

I put a piston , a barrel and a new clutch in my old 044 , it will see me out all original parts .
The guy who I get my stuff from tells me the new stuff is all computer based for service and diagnostics, again probably great if the warranty is in date , but then what. Maybe like cars once they are a few years old you just get another and dont think about repairing them .

either that or the ‘right to repair’ bill gets a hearing. Got a flyer from snap on not so long ago. The new Chrysler/ merc cars are only being supported by snap on diagnostic. They’ve bought the exclusive rights off chrysler

Most of those diagnostic companies reverse engineer stuff anyway, all the modern Land Rover stuff apparently changes codes all the time to make it difficult yet people are still able to get in and even change settings the dealer will tell you isn't possible. My IID Pro can do stuff the dealer kit can't.

I guess with chainsaws repairs are such a small market why would anyone bother.

Ok back to my original problem , rang hire co first thing , quite abrupt fella said well it was sharpened because he did it .....
I was going to take it back there but instead wanted the opinion of a dealer so took it there , he said yea it's been sharpened but not the depth ....

£22 later I came out with the stihl sharpening kit pictured and after a quick look at u tube set about it ..... guide and flat file later it's cuts much better !
Good thing is I can use the kit on my cordless makita as I've yet to try sharpening it ....

Saw matey at the hire shop when I returned it and told him I'd sorted it , he didn't have much too say

I won't be going back there needless to say !

Stihl dealer I’m friendly with reckons servicing and repairs is where the money is. Makes nothing off the sales, especially to pro users who want the best deal possible.
