Okay thanks for replies , hire place is 15 miles away , stihl dealer 8 ish miles ....
I only nee it to do a few cuts
I might ring hire place at 8 am see if they have a new chain in stock but it's all time I don't really have to take it back ,

Think I've sorted the oil feed prob , tipped the old oil out , squirted penetrating oil in and refilled with my chain oil , chain seems damp now ....

what's wrong with engine oil?

known tree surgeons use used oil from when they service their cars / vans.

Please feel free to tell me why this is a no no.

I sling whatever oil I can find in the chain lube reservoir.

Never had any problems....

Not sticky enough and not enviro. Oregon chain oil is cheap enough not to mess about

I think its to do with the environment , I use waste ol , its thinner and it flies off a wee bit , so i just use more of it ,, great if your cheap like me , and as for the environment , If im cutting down trees , a splash of oil will make little odds.
Im not the quiche eating , shandy drinking , futon wetting ethnic yogurt weaver type any ways.

I've had my Stihl whatever, 14 years, many chains, only changed the guide last year, changed the oil / lube pump many years ago, initially used proper chain oil for years , gave up some years ago, I just make sure it's spraying oil when I start it, never had any issues, using a pot of 20 year old 15/40, Robert is my father's brother...

As long as the fuel and lube empty equally as they always have I'm happy, well and it cuts....

The oil needs to make it from the top of the bar to the bottom must be ****e loads flying of at the sprocket it also atomises not pleasent to breath proper oil doesn't so much.

I rev it up against something and check for spray, bit like a lathe....

If you point it at a surface you should see a line of oil created if it's working correctly

Learnt that as an newbie moons ago on a rather nice patio.

Its very noticeable when climbing being more confined with it.
Probably not a problem for the odd use

seems to run out of the lower third of the bar , thats where the exit from the oil pump is located , and flows no prob , leaves a line if you stand in front of it , but thats no prob as i dont stand in front of it , wipes off at the end of a day , and has never caused me a problem , seems not to clog oil holes as bad as the thicker stuff , maybe the faster flow keeps dust from clogging .

Having been buying £100 bars for a bigger saw my use case is different to the average fire wooder

Thats the secret to us getting along, we don't all have to agree all the time.

if i was paying a hundred quid for a bar ,,,,,

id be buying the real oil too ,

even my 044 only has an 18 inch bar on it , bigger than that and its not something I should be doing. How much is a chain if the bar is a hundred quid ?

Depends 42" bar £130 135 drive links £35 made up if i buy 100ft reel comes down to about £8 but reel is £160

lol ,,, I wouldnt even be looking at that , I cant imagine what it would cost if it started to go wrong ,, houses with no roofs and the like spring to mind. To each their own.
