I'll probably just buy a replacement chain and only use it for wood like it was intended![]()
Keep the old chain for cutting roots and other stuff that will wreck a good chain.

I was thinking of using a 5" angle grinder with a 9" disc on it for getting roots out.
I'm not really but I was thinking of trying a chainsaw to remove the remains of a stump in my garden.....I won't now.![]()
To be honest, it's rotten as hell so wouldn't take much to get it out, it's just that I is lazy.Two options, one of which I've done;
1. Get enough purchase on the stump, tie a tow strap round it, attach the other end to your 4x4 and pull it out. Great fun
2. Hire a stump remover for £60 - also looks like great fun but never tried it![]()
Disagree with tightening the chain, tension the chain correctly then sharpen. No need to tighten it then slacken it off. Never seen anyone using your method and I have worked in forestry for over 30 years
Never let the chain touch the ground when it's moving and for roots as above get a mattock, they are only £15 so not much more than a good chain. If you are sharpening on the bar set the chain tight before you start or it will twist and your angles will be all over the place and don't forget to adjust it back after you finish.
Sounds like your bar is knackered and your file is *****d !
Quote of the day "its a file not an effing scrubbing brush"
The easiest way I've found to remove stumps is beer.
The technique is to have a beer while making a small bonfire around the stump, then have more beer while it burns.
if your cutting with any type of saw blade just stand to one side and if it digs in it just flies past u and not in to uStihl a with 12" tct wood blade in it..You need to make a spacer up as the spindle size is not compatable with blade bore size. Ive used this method now for 10 years cutting plywood sheets up for roofs and also tried the beast on tree roots when renovating a large property.Works a treat but not very safe iff your not confident so ignore my post![]()
You used to get Chrystal's that you poured down a hole you had bored in a unwanted stump. Think they rotted the stump from the inside out.
JCB make the best stump removers![]()
