Thanks Al, I was sure I remembered laying a thick cast rod into a broken piece of casting almost forty years ago! Those rods say they are for speroidal graphite cast, do they do others for ordinary grey CI, or should I just get some thick nickel rods to run in?Yes OA is possible and you probably mean a cast iron rod (they were cast). Im not sure but I doubt if they are still available but you could use mild steel or nickel base. With OA you need to get it hot (very hot over 500 oC) and then slow cool afterwards
SIF used to do the rods but they are Weldability now and I think its mostly bought in stuff from China.
To be honest using CI isnt a good route as the structure is governed as much by cooling rate as it is by chemistry
