julianf Member Messages 7,976 Location devon, uk Sep 14, 2016 #22 Our place was like that - hardboard up the stairs. Luckily all the original spindles were just behind the layer of 3mm board. Even a doorway had just been boarded over - original door was still hung behind the plaster.
