Does all this mean the CO monitors sold for homes are no good? I have one in my workshop and the house. Surely that is scandalous if they are sold as something that is for your safety?

The idea is that you have regular boiler and flue checks and keep the systems well maintained, and the CO monitor is there to detect a major problem, not the tiny leaks I believe?

My old back boiler gave up after 37 years service. It came with the house I had a new system boiler fitted and it's warranty is only good if serviced yearly.
Due in May this year. For obvious reasons it didn't happen. I finally got them out last week as it had broken down. It's 18 months old
I had the CO monitor as I worried about the old boiler but the new one is rubbish compared to it and I seriously doubt it will be going in 30 odd years!!!

It isn't a nice feeling.
My brother and I had a mild dose as kids after travelling in the back of a Suzuki jeep with the rear canvas open.
It horrifies me to see some 4x4s with electric rear opening windows. Guaranteed to suck exhaust fumes in!

I get a blast of fumes in the Surf with the rear window down if I'm carrying long stuff, the veg oil takes the edge off it though...

Funnily enough the Surf was one of the cars I was thinking of. I collected one for a mate of mine from London. Lovely to drive he had it years - just don't open the back window. Don't know how they allow it.
Not such a problem on modern cars - almost impossible to gas yourself the exhausts are so clean now.

Why would you dismiss the oven from being a source of CO. Any fuel burning device is capable of producing CO if the combustion isn’t complete

There are loud mutterings and moves to fit CO detectors in Fixed fire alarm systems.

But there is resistance from certain groups on the grounds of cost and the lack of evidence that they will save life's. Especially if it is a council property and the Gas safe engineers have fitted a CO detector for a few pounds..

I think it's a mistake to link CO and fire systems on the whole. Too many people unable to differentiate what was triggering and likely to rip system out if they can't see obvious smoke and it keeps triggering.

I have a hard wired interlinked fire alarm with CO detector system linked in but it at least tells you the CO reading so you have a chance of finding out if it's CO that triggered it.

In Scotland we have all this coming in new legislation that we have to have CO alarms and interlinked fire alarms in every house by next year sometime.

You can change the sound of a fire alarm and intruder alarm.
So muppets can tell the difference.

If a tenet rips out a fire alarm system they should be evicted and face the wrath of the law.

I fit CO detectors in systems and set them up asnd show them to the residents that each has a different sound.

But the simple rule is.
If in doubt.
GET OUT.

I once got called out to disconnect a carbon monoxide detector that kept going off by a housing association .when I got there I asked if the gas heating engineer had been out to test the boiler and fire and they said no. so did I .its not getting disconnected till someone has been and confirmed there's nothing wrong . so easy to be liable if the sh....it hits the fan. no one else wants to take responsibility

Same here. But I swop out a "Faulty one" with a good one. If it goes off again I tell them to get the gas engineer out and refuse to issue a certificate for the site.

Some do not like that, but my ass is not in your sling.

I don't carry mains powered units, officially.

But on our systems I carry spares to carry our most repairs. The only ones I can not carry are the ones where an old has to be returned for a recon unit to be sent.
Or those pesky dam closed protocol units.

At work we build experimental set ups, lots of different gasdetectionsystems also CO.
We fit CO as close as possible to the operators nose.
We have discussions all the time what to do in case of an alarm, but the first thing is always to automically block all gas flows to the set up, evacuate and vent the workspace.
Then we go in, flush, analyze and leaktest.

What if I move into a HMO and there's fire alarms missing? I only noticed a couple of days ago how bad this house is, fire extinguishers last serviced 2015 (One is missing too I believe, shouldn't there be one on each floor?), it prompted me to check the smoke alarms, two missing batteries, a mains one not slotted in far enough to actually be powered (Also missing it's battery) and one completely missing. What's the chance the boiler's been serviced this year...

Landlord will be getting an earful believe me!
