There is no road tax in the UK either, it's vehicle tax or vehicle excise duty.

It's basically a fine for daring to own a motor vehicle. Despite the fact that without motor vehicles and the whole infrastructure that serves them, this little island would go bust in no time flat.
Still, at least the 'asylum seekers' would go elsewhere as there'd be no money for them either
There was talk at one stage of charging VED even for vehicles that were stripped for repair/ renovation, in crates, in your garage.

You could add-in the corporation tax from the power generation companies created due to all those business lighting and heating their premises and probably IPT on all the various insurance policies needed to back it all... and other revenue, I'm sure... like all the VAT on the products bought by all those people mentioned above who wouldn't have any money to spend were it not for those motor vehicles which the government hates so much they want us all to give up. Except they don't; they just want to charge us at every turn for keeping the country going.
On the other hand, one thing that makes me laugh: our office is bang in the middle of most of the local car dealerships. You see the surrounding office car parks full of brand-new cars, bought from those very dealerships. They spend 8 or 9 hours a day parked up and every evening the car parks empty, only to fill up again the next morning with the same cars, often in the same spaces. You can tell they're the same cars because almost every other one now has a 'private plate', it's the de rigeur image accessory on the local sprawling housing estate.
So presumably most if not all of those people are going to work, to pay for the car in which they go to work...

used to be could only be taxed for a year could not be refunded abolished in 2001 by all accounts
